Chapter 1

Chapter One: Fading Embers

The rain lashed against the windows of Whispering Pages, the cozy bookstore nestled on the edge of the sleepy coastal town of Haven Bay. Margot Harper wiped the fog from the glass with a worn cloth, her reflection staring back at her—a woman of forty-one with soft auburn curls pinned haphazardly, lines of exhaustion etching her green eyes. The storm had rolled in unexpectedly that evening, mirroring the turmoil still churning inside her since Paul had shattered their fifteen-year marriage three months ago. She had come home early one day to find him tangled in the sheets with his young assistant, his excuses ringing hollow as she packed her bags and drove straight to the small apartment above the store.

Now, alone in the dim light of the shop, Margot moved methodically through the aisles, her sensible flats whispering against the hardwood floors lined with towering shelves of romance novels and mysteries. The scent of aged paper and sea salt filled the air, a comforting embrace amid her unraveling life. She had poured everything into this place after the divorce papers were signed—long hours, endless reorganizing, anything to drown out the silence of her empty bed and the sting of betrayal. Their marriage had been a slow fade: no passion, no intimacy for years, just polite coexistence until his infidelity lit the final spark. At forty-one, Margot felt invisible, her body a forgotten landscape she no longer recognized as desirable.

A sharp knock at the back door jolted her from her thoughts. She glanced at the clock—nearly nine p.m. Deliveries were supposed to end by seven. Bracing herself against the wind that whipped through as she opened the door, Margot squinted into the downpour. There stood a young man, soaked to the bone, wrestling with a stack of heavy crates marked 'New Releases.' His dark hair plastered to his forehead, water streaming down a chiseled jawline shadowed with stubble. Broad shoulders strained under a drenched jacket, and his piercing blue eyes met hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"Evening, ma'am," he said, his voice deep and steady over the roar of the storm. "Finn Reilly with Coastal Freight. Got a big shipment for you—looks like it got held up by the weather." He hefted the first crate effortlessly, muscles flexing beneath his wet shirt, and stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.

Margot's heart pounded as she closed the door against the gale. "Thank you... Finn. I wasn't expecting it so late." She watched him set the crate down with care, his movements precise and commanding. Droplets traced paths down his neck, disappearing into the collar of his shirt, and she suddenly felt the warmth rising in her cheeks. It had been years since a man had looked at her like that—lingering, appraising.

"No trouble," Finn replied, flashing a crooked smile that revealed straight white teeth. "Wouldn't leave these out in the rain. Where do you want 'em?" His gaze held hers a beat too long, sparking something unfamiliar in the pit of her stomach—a flicker of heat amid the cold despair.

As he began unloading, Margot busied herself clearing space, but she couldn't ignore the electric pull drawing her toward this stranger who had stormed into her quiet world on a night meant for solitude.
