Chapter 1
Chapter One: The Knock
The power dies so completely that Mara can hear her own pulse. One second she’s building a rainstorm for a podcast, layering droplets and distant thunder into a heartbroken cityscape, and the next the apartment goes soft—no fan, no fridge, no laptop hum filling the corners of her life. The silence isn’t empty; it’s thick, like a theater before the first breath.
And then, a knock.
She freezes. The hallway is usually a rumor of strangers—Amazon, laundry, someone dragging a chair too early in the morning. But this knock is three gentle taps she recognizes, although she’s never met the person who makes them. It’s the rhythm she hears through their shared wall when he arrives home late: a napkin of sound—apology, maybe, or just habit.
She opens the door. He’s there with a candle in a jar, its flame sculpting his face into soft planes. She’s seen the back of his head on the stairs, his reflection in the elevator door, knows the smell of sesame oil that leaks through the wall at midnight. But up close he has a smile you want to follow.
“Hi,” he says, lifting the candle. “I’m Rowan. I heard your podcast… well, not your podcast, but your… storm? It was good. Intense.”
Mara laughs. “Mara. And thanks. The rain is on hold.”
“Blackout,” he says, as if naming it will tame it. “I have a camp stove. Ice cream’s going to melt. Do you want to help it not become a tragedy?”
She looks over his shoulder: the corridor looks like a swallowed candle. “Lead the way.”
