Chapter 1
Chapter One: Cracks in the Perfect Facade
Charlotte Hayes smoothed the crisp white linen tablecloth for the third time that morning, her fingers lingering on the flawless folds. As the lead wedding planner at Evergreen Events, she thrived on these details—the ones that turned ordinary moments into unforgettable memories. Her office in downtown Seattle buzzed with the soft hum of her assistant typing up vendor confirmations, but Charlotte's focus was laser-sharp on Mia Reynolds' big day. In just four days, her best friend since college would marry Alex Thornton at the opulent Willow Bay Resort, and Charlotte, as maid of honor, refused to let a single petal droop out of place.
"Everything has to be perfect," Charlotte murmured to herself, adjusting a sample floral centerpiece. Perfection wasn't just her job; it was her armor. At twenty-eight, she'd built a life where control reigned supreme. Her father had walked out when she was eight, leaving her mother to piece together a fractured home with endless shifts at the diner. Charlotte had learned early that if she planned meticulously, anticipated every variable, nothing could blindside her again. No abandoned promises, no empty chairs at the table.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Mia: *Can't wait for the rehearsal! You're a lifesaver, Char.* Charlotte smiled, typing back a quick thumbs-up emoji followed by *Wouldn't miss it.* She glanced at the clock—early afternoon. Plenty of time to swing by her apartment and grab the final seating chart before meeting the caterer. Grabbing her tote bag stuffed with binders, she waved goodbye to her assistant and headed out into the drizzly Seattle streets.
The drive to her cozy Capitol Hill apartment was uneventful, the wipers swishing rhythmically against the rain-speckled windshield. Charlotte hummed along to a playlist of romantic ballads, already mentally rehearsing the toast she'd give at the reception. She pictured Mia's radiant smile, Alex's adoring gaze, and felt a familiar pang of envy mixed with joy. Her own relationship with Derek wasn't fireworks, but it was steady—three years of shared Netflix nights and weekend brunches. Reliable. Perfectly adequate.
She unlocked the door quietly, not wanting to startle him if he was napping after his night shift at the hospital. The apartment smelled off—musky perfume mingled with her usual lavender candles. Frowning, Charlotte kicked off her heels and padded toward the bedroom. Muffled laughter drifted from behind the closed door. Her heart stuttered.
Pushing it open, the world tilted. Derek was tangled in their sheets with a woman Charlotte vaguely recognized from his gym—blonde hair spilling over his chest as they kissed passionately. They froze, Derek's eyes widening in horror.
"Charlotte! Babe, this isn't—" he stammered, scrambling to cover himself.
The blonde snatched her clothes, muttering apologies as she bolted past. Charlotte stood rooted, the seating chart slipping from her numb fingers. Nausea rose in her throat. Not now. Not days before the wedding. Her perfect world cracked wide open, and for the first time in years, she had no plan to fix it.
