About this book

Summary

In the glass towers of Sterling Enterprises, control is currency and desire is the ultimate leverage. When ruthless CEO Vivienne Hartley meets her match in the audacious Julian Kane, a dangerous game begins—one where every command is foreplay, every surrender is victory, and the line between boss and lover disappears in a haze of silk ties and whispered orders.

Chapter 1: The New Variable

The 47th floor of Sterling Enterprises was a cathedral of glass and steel, and Vivienne Hartley was its unforgiving god.

She watched the open-plan floor from behind one-way windows that turned her office into a panopticon. Every screen, every whisper, every nervous glance belonged to her. At thirty-eight she had built an empire on the principle that desire and fear were simply two different levers for the same outcome: obedience.

That was why the new executive assistant leaning against the espresso bar at 8:47 a.m., laughing too easily with three senior VPs, registered as a threat.

Julian Kane.

Six-two, dark hair just long enough to look expensive when messy, suit cut close enough to make the legal department sweat. Harvard MBA, three years at McKinsey, fluent in Mandarin and bedroom eyes. HR had sent his file with a Post-it that read “Handle with care.”

Vivienne never handled anything with care.

She pressed the intercom. “Mr. Kane. My office. Now.”

The VPs scattered like startled birds when he straightened, smile still playing at the corners of his mouth. He crossed the floor with the lazy confidence of a man who had never been told no and didn’t plan on starting today.

He knocked once—cocky—and entered without waiting.

“You wanted me, Ms. Hartley?”

The door clicked shut behind him. Vivienne didn’t speak immediately. She let the silence stretch until it became its own command. Then she turned from the window, Louboutins silent on Italian marble, and studied him the way a jeweler studies a flaw.

“Do you know what I dislike most, Julian?”

He tilted his head. “People who waste your time?”

“People who waste mine by flirting with my executives instead of learning where I keep the good scotch.”

A flicker—amusement, not fear. Interesting.

“I was networking,” he said smoothly.

“You were peacocking. There’s a difference.” She moved closer, close enough that the subtle heat of his body reached her. “In this building, the only person allowed to distract my senior team is me. Understood?”

His gaze dropped to her mouth for half a heartbeat before returning to her eyes. “Perfectly.”

“Good.” She let her fingers brush the knot of his tie, a touch so light it could have been accidental. It wasn’t. “Then you’ll have no problem delivering the revised Q4 projections to my desk by end of day. Every line item footnoted, every assumption sourced. You’ll cancel whatever plans you had tonight.”

Something sparked behind the easy charm. Challenge. Want.

“End of day,” he repeated, voice a shade rougher.

“Five o’clock. Not 5:01.” She stepped back, already dismissing him. “Welcome to Sterling Enterprises, Mr. Kane.”

He paused at the door. “For the record, I wasn’t flirting with them. I was making them nervous. Different skill set.”

The door closed before she smiled.
