Dahlia Monroe wiped the dust from the windowsill of her cozy bookstore, Whispering Pages, and gazed out at the snow-dusted streets of Evergreen Hollow. Flurries danced in the crisp December air, blanketing the quaint town in a soft white hush that matched the quiet ache in her chest. At twenty-eight, she had built a life here among the shelves of stories—romances that promised eternal love, mysteries that unraveled secrets, fantasies that whisked readers away. Yet her own story felt stuck on the first page, especially as Christmas loomed just two weeks away.
She straightened a stack of holiday novels on the front display table, their covers glowing with images of mistletoe kisses and fireside embraces. The scent of cinnamon candles flickered from the counter, mingling with the earthy aroma of old books. Dahlia sighed, tucking a stray auburn curl behind her ear. Another year without anyone to share eggnog or unwrap gifts with. Her last relationship had ended two years ago in heartbreak—her ex had called her 'too reserved,' too wrapped up in her books to notice the world. Since then, she'd poured everything into the shop, avoiding the dating scene like a plot twist she wasn't ready for.
The bell above the door jingled, pulling her from her thoughts. Mrs. Hargrove bustled in, her cheeks rosy from the cold. "Dahlia, dear, those peppermint mochas you recommended last week were divine! Have you got any new Christmas romances in?"
Dahlia smiled warmly, her shyness easing with familiar customers. "Of course, Mrs. Hargrove. Right over here—there's a wonderful one about a woman who finds love in a snowed-in cabin." She led the way, chatting lightly as she rang up the purchase.
After the older woman left, Dahlia checked her calendar. Tomorrow was the big event: a book signing with Ronan Hale, the bestselling romance author whose novels had flown off the shelves in pre-orders. His agent had booked it months ago, promising it would draw crowds to the usually sleepy shop. Dahlia had read one of his books last night, blushing at the steamy scenes between his brooding hero and spirited heroine. "How does he write such passion?" she murmured to herself, a flutter stirring unexpectedly in her stomach.
She locked up as dusk fell, the fairy lights strung across the shop twinkling like distant stars. Outside, the town square glowed with a massive Christmas tree, carolers' voices drifting on the wind. Dahlia pulled her coat tight and hurried home to her small apartment above the bakery next door, the warmth of fresh bread wafting up. Curled on her couch with a mug of tea, she flipped open Ronan's book again, losing herself in his words. Little did she know, the author himself was en route, his car cutting through the snowy roads toward Evergreen Hollow, ready to turn her quiet world upside down.
