Chapter 1: First Contact
The first time I saw Beckett Callahan in person, he was bleeding on my treatment table and already calling me a puck bunny with a degree.
“Tell me again why they hired a cheerleader to fix my groin?” he asked the ceiling, voice like gravel dragged over asphalt. A cut above his left eye dripped red onto the white paper liner.
I snapped on nitrile gloves loud enough to make him flinch. “Because the last guy you called a cheerleader quit after you told the entire locker room he had ‘soft hands and a softer dick.’ I, however, don’t scare easy.”
He turned his head. Those famous storm-gray eyes narrowed. “Riley Quinn,” he said, tasting my name like spoiled milk. “You’re the one whose goalie ex fucked the entire bunny hutch on live.”
The room went arctic. Every player in the league knew that story; half of them had watched it happen in real time. I felt my smile go razor-sharp.
“Congratulations. You can read. Now drop your pants, Callahan. I need to see how bad you tore yourself up trying to look tough.”
He barked a laugh that made the athletic trainers in the hallway scatter. “You first, sweetheart.”
I stepped between his thighs, gripped the waistband of his compression shorts, and yanked them down in one merciless tug. He hissed—whether from pain or surprise, I didn’t care. The man was built like a brick wall had sex with a freight train, tattoos crawling over every inch of visible skin, and the rumored “groin strain” was already swelling purple along the crease where thigh met torso.
Also, he was half-hard. Of course he was.
I met his glare without blinking. “Lie back and shut up. You’ve got six weeks of me, twice a day. Try not to cry.”
Beckett lowered himself slowly, jaw clenched so tight I heard molars creak. “Six weeks is a long time to spend with a woman who hates my guts.”
I picked up the tablet that controlled the brand-new CryoRecovery Suit hanging on the wall like a high-tech wetsuit. “Good thing I get paid by the hour.”
He smirked, all teeth and menace. “We’ll see who breaks first, Doc.”
I smiled back, sweet as antifreeze, and tapped the screen to life.
Game on.
