Chapter 1
Chapter One: The Wager
The dim glow of crystal chandeliers bathed the private poker room in the penthouse suite of Harrington Towers, casting long shadows across the polished mahogany table. Fletcher Harrington leaned back in his leather armchair, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips as he raked in a substantial pile of chips. His dark hair was tousled just enough to look effortlessly handsome, and his tailored navy suit hugged his athletic frame perfectly. At thirty-five, he was the epitome of success—a billionaire hotel magnate whose empire spanned the globe, from New York skyscrapers to sun-kissed resorts. But tonight, amid the haze of cigar smoke and clinking glasses, his mind was on something far more thrilling than cards.
Across from him sat Marcus Hale, a venture capitalist with a perpetual grin and a penchant for risky bets, and Theo Langford, a tech whiz whose sharp wit matched his poker face. The three had been friends since their Ivy League days, bonded by late-night escapades and unbreakable loyalty. As the dealer shuffled for the next hand, Marcus tossed back his scotch and eyed Fletcher with mischief.
"Heard you hired that hotshot marketing exec, Olivia Reed," Marcus said, his voice laced with amusement. "The one who turned around that failing chain in Miami. Word is, she's as brilliant as she is stunning. You sure you can keep it professional, Fletch?"
Fletcher chuckled, dealing the cards with practiced ease. "Professional? Please. I've got this resort launch locked down. Golden Palms in the Maldives is going to be my masterpiece—pristine beaches, overwater villas, infinity pools that scream luxury. Olivia's just the spark to make the marketing explode. Nothing more."
Theo raised an eyebrow, sipping his bourbon. "You've got a type, mate. Smart, fiery women who see right through your charm. Last one, what was her name? Left you high and dry after you ghosted her post-vacation."
"Exactly," Fletcher replied, his green eyes gleaming. "Fleeting flings are my specialty. No strings, no drama. Olivia Reed? She's an employee. Off-limits."
Marcus leaned forward, a predatory glint in his eye. "Prove it. Ten grand says you crack within the month. Late nights planning the launch, tropical sunsets—you'll be head over heels."
Fletcher's competitive streak ignited. He thrived on challenges, whether sealing multimillion-dollar deals or outmaneuvering opponents at the table. "You're on. But make it twenty. I won't fall for her. Not a chance."
Theo laughed, matching the bet. "Done. Loser pays up at the launch gala."
They shook on it, the air thick with anticipation. Fletcher felt the familiar rush—the gamble wasn't just money; it was his ironclad control over his heart. Women came and went, but love? That was for fools. As the game resumed, his phone buzzed with a confirmation email: Olivia Reed's flight to the Maldives landed tomorrow. Game on.
Little did he know, the real stakes were about to skyrocket.
