Chapter 1

Chapter One: Scent of the Mate

The jagged peaks of the Blackridge Mountains loomed like ancient guardians under a blood-red moon, casting long shadows over the dense pine forests below. Frost clung to the needles, crunching under the paws of the Silverfang Pack as they moved in perfect formation. Grayson Blackthorn, alpha of the Silverfang, led the hunt with unyielding precision. His massive gray wolf form cut through the underbrush, muscles rippling beneath sleek fur, golden eyes scanning the territory with predatory focus. At thirty-two, he had ruled his pack for a decade, his arrogance forged in battles that left rivals in the dust. Tonight's territorial run was routine—marking boundaries to warn off the Ironclaw Pack encroaching from the east—but Grayson sensed unrest in the air, a whisper of challenge that set his hackles rising.

Flanking him were his betas: Ronan, the loyal second with russet fur and a scar across his muzzle, and Mira, the swift enforcer whose black coat blended with the night. Behind them, twenty wolves fanned out, their howls echoing to stake claim. Grayson's mind raced with strategy. The Ironclaw alpha, Viktor, had been testing borders too often, sending scouts that vanished into the wilds. Grayson would not yield an inch of Silverfang land. He paused at a ridge overlooking a narrow valley, nostrils flaring as he scented the wind. Pine, earth, prey... and something else. Something foreign. Human.

A low growl rumbled from his chest. Humans rarely ventured this deep into the forbidden ranges, warned away by local legends of beasts and vanishing hikers. But this scent was different—rich, intoxicating, laced with wildflowers and warm skin. It pierced him like a claw to the heart, igniting a primal fire in his veins. Mate. The word slammed into his mind, undeniable, ancient instinct roaring to life. His wolf form shuddered, bones cracking and reforming as he shifted back to human, standing tall and nude in the moonlight, his broad shoulders and chiseled torso marked with tribal tattoos of his lineage. 'Find the intruder,' he commanded, voice a deep thunder that carried to his pack. 'Now.'

Ronan shifted beside him, wiping sweat from his brow. 'Alpha, a human? Up here? Could be a scout for Ironclaw, using them as bait.' Grayson shot him a glare that silenced further speculation. 'She's mine. No one touches her.' He didn't explain the mate bond; his pack would sense it soon enough. Clothed only in urgency, he sprinted down the slope, the pack shifting to human form behind him, grabbing packs for clothes as they followed. The scent pulled him like a tether, leading through a stream and up a rocky incline to a small clearing.

There she was. Lila Harper knelt by a cluster of glowing moonflowers, her camera focused intently, oblivious to the danger. Mid-twenties, with sun-kissed skin, wild auburn curls escaping a ponytail, and curves hugged by hiking pants and a fitted jacket, she looked every bit the city escapee chasing solitude. She'd come to the mountains two days ago, fleeing a dead-end job and a cheating ex, seeking peace in photography. The isolation had been perfect until now. A twig snapped under Grayson's boot, and she whirled, green eyes wide with alarm.

"Who the hell are you?" Lila demanded, scrambling to her feet, hand fumbling for the bear spray on her belt. Her voice held a tremor, but her stance was defiant, chin lifted. Grayson stepped into the moonlight, his presence overwhelming—six-foot-five of raw power, dark hair tousled, piercing gold-flecked eyes locking onto hers. The pack encircled the clearing silently, watching their alpha.

"You're on Silverfang land, little human," Grayson said, his tone laced with possession. He inhaled deeply, her scent flooding him, stirring his cock despite the situation. Mate. His. 'I'm Grayson Blackthorn, alpha here. And you... you're coming with me.' He closed the distance in two strides, ignoring her raised spray.

Lila backed up, heart pounding. "Back off, psycho! I don't know what kind of cult this is, but I'm leaving." She glanced at the encircling strangers—men and women in tactical gear, eyes glowing faintly unnatural—and knew she was in deep trouble. Grayson's hand shot out, gripping her wrist gently but immovably, pulling the spray away. Electricity sparked at the touch, a jolt that made her gasp and him growl low.

"You don't understand," he murmured, voice husky, thumb stroking her pulse point. "You're my mate. Fated. I can smell it, feel it. You're part of this pack now." Confusion and heat warred in her eyes, but before she could protest, he turned to his pack. "Witness! Lila Harper is my destined mate. She is under my protection. Any who harm her answers to me."

The pack erupted in howls and cheers, some shifting partially in excitement. Ronan clapped Grayson's shoulder. "Congratulations, Alpha! The goddess blesses us with a strong union." Mira eyed Lila curiously but nodded allegiance. Lila yanked her arm free, fury overriding fear. "Mate? Pack? Are you all insane? Let me go, or I'll scream bloody murder!"

Grayson's jaw tightened, arrogance flaring. He scooped her up effortlessly over his shoulder, her protests muffled against his back as he strode toward the stronghold. "Scream all you want, Lila. You're mine now. And I'll prove it." Her fists pounded his unyielding muscles, but beneath the anger, a traitorous warmth bloomed where her body pressed against his heat. The pack followed, the hunt forgotten, as Grayson carried his fiery mate home, the bond igniting a fury neither could deny.

Complete sentences would improve the book. It started out with great detail and then faded off.
