Chapter 1

Chapter One: The Engagement Gala

The glittering chandeliers of the Ellis family penthouse cast a golden glow over the sea of black tuxedos and shimmering gowns. Perched atop their Manhattan skyscraper, the ballroom offered a breathtaking view of Central Park twinkling below like a sea of stars. Emily Carter stood at the edge of the crowd, her fingers tightening around a flute of champagne she hadn't touched. At twenty-six, she was no stranger to high-society galas, but this one felt like a noose tightening around her neck.

Her father had dropped the bomb two days ago in his Park Avenue office. Carter Holdings was drowning in debt from a string of bad investments, and the only lifeline was a merger with Ellis Global—their bitter rivals for decades. The price? Her hand in marriage to Brandon Ellis, the elder son and CEO. Refuse, and the company crumbled, taking their family's legacy with it. Emily had argued, pleaded, even threatened to walk away, but her father’s eyes had been steely. "This is bigger than you, Emily. It's survival."

Now here she was, dressed in a sleek emerald gown that hugged her curves and exposed just enough skin to turn heads, waiting for the official announcement. She scanned the room, spotting her father chatting animatedly with Ellis board members. No sign of her fiancé yet. Good. She needed a moment to steel herself.

A low chuckle drew her attention. Kyle Ellis approached, his golden hair catching the light, his smile as warm and disarming as ever. At twenty-nine, he was the charismatic VP of Marketing, the brother everyone loved—the opposite of the cold machine his reputation painted Brandon to be. They'd crossed paths at elite events since their teens, always with that spark of flirtation.

"Emily Carter," Kyle said, his voice smooth as aged whiskey. He leaned in close, his cologne a subtle mix of sandalwood and spice. "You look like you're plotting an escape. Need a partner in crime?"

She forced a smile, though her pulse quickened under his gaze. "Tempting, Kyle. But I'm here to play the good little heiress tonight."

He handed her a fresh glass of champagne, his fingers brushing hers deliberately. "Good little heiress? Please. I've watched you outmaneuver sharks in boardrooms since we were kids. This arrangement... it's a waste of your fire."

Before she could respond, the room hushed. The Ellis patriarch might be deceased, but his legacy loomed large. Brandon Ellis stepped onto the raised platform, commanding attention without effort. Tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair swept back and a jawline sharp enough to slice through tension, he exuded control. His tailored tuxedo fit like a second skin, and his piercing blue eyes swept the crowd before landing on her—cold, assessing, devoid of warmth.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Brandon began, his voice deep and resonant, carrying easily over the microphone. "Tonight, we celebrate not just a merger, but the end of old rivalries. Ellis Global and Carter Holdings will unite, stronger together. And to seal this alliance..." He extended a hand toward Emily.

She crossed the room on steady legs, every eye on her. Placing her hand in his, she felt the chill of his skin, the firm grip that brooked no argument. Up close, he towered over her, his presence overwhelming. "Emily Carter has agreed to become my wife."

The applause erupted, cameras flashing from society reporters. Brandon lifted their joined hands for the toast, but he barely glanced at her, his touch mechanical. No smile, no spark—just duty. Emily's stomach twisted. This was her life now?

As the crowd surged forward with congratulations, Brandon released her hand and turned to greet a cluster of executives. Emily slipped away toward the terrace doors, needing air. The cool night breeze hit her face as she stepped out, the city lights sprawling endlessly below.

Footsteps followed. Kyle appeared beside her, two glasses of whiskey in hand. He offered one, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "That was brutal. He touch you like you're radioactive?"

Emily accepted the glass, taking a sip that burned pleasantly. "It's fine. Business, right?"

Kyle moved closer, his body heat cutting through the chill. The terrace was empty, the party's hum muffled behind glass walls. "Business? Emily, I've wanted you since that summer gala in the Hamptons when you were eighteen and stole every breath in the room. If they'd picked me..." His voice dropped low, heated. "You'd already be mine tonight."

Her breath caught as he reached out, his thumb brushing her lower lip, tracing the fullness with deliberate slowness. The touch sent a jolt straight through her, warm and electric, so different from Brandon's frost. Kyle's eyes darkened, promising wicked pleasures. "No chains, no mergers. Just you, me, and a night you'd beg to repeat."

Heat flushed her cheeks, her body responding despite her resolve. Kyle leaned in, his lips inches from hers, but she pulled back, heart pounding. "I'm not here to play games, Kyle. This is my reality now."

He smiled, unrepentant, stepping back with a shrug. "Your reality doesn't have to be a cage. Think about it."

Inside, the party raged on. Emily rejoined the fray, pasting on smiles for photos and small talk. Brandon found her eventually, his hand on her lower back possessive in public but distant. "Smile for the cameras," he murmured, his breath cool against her ear. No more words.

Hours later, as the gala wound down, Brandon guided her to the private elevator. Her father had already left, arrangements made. "We'll fly to the Hamptons tomorrow," he said flatly. "The estate there is better for... optics during planning."

Emily nodded, exhaustion settling in. "Optics. Of course."

In the limo ride to her hotel, silence stretched thick between them. Brandon stared out the window, jaw clenched. Emily studied his profile—the unyielding lines, the controlled power. Hatred simmered beneath her skin. He saw her as the enemy, a pawn from a family that had supposedly betrayed his. Little did he know how mutual that feeling was.

As the car pulled up to her building, Brandon finally spoke. "This changes nothing between our families. It's a contract, nothing more."

"Crystal clear," she replied, voice laced with ice. She stepped out without looking back, the door clicking shut behind her.

Alone in her suite, Emily kicked off her heels and poured another drink. Kyle's touch lingered on her lip, Brandon's chill on her hand. Tomorrow, she'd step into his world—the Hamptons estate, wedding plans, forced intimacy. But tonight, doubt whispered: What if this fire between enemies burned them both?
