Chapter 1
Chapter One: Fresh on the Ice
Emily Harper stepped into the bustling Vancouver Grizzlies arena, her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves. The air hummed with the sharp scent of ice and sweat, and the distant echo of sticks clacking against pucks reverberated through the corridors. At thirty-two, she had clawed her way up from small-town clinics to this—physiotherapist for one of the NHL's top contenders. Her resume boasted success stories from minor leagues, but the Grizzlies were the big leagues, with playoffs looming and a Stanley Cup within reach. This job could launch her career into the stars, or sink it if she faltered.
Coach Harlan Reeves met her at the training room entrance, his grizzled face breaking into a welcoming grin. 'Emily, glad you made it. We're desperate for your magic touch. Our star forward, Ryan Maddox, blew out his knee three months back—a torn ACL. He's itching to get back, but he's been a pain in the ass about rehab. Thinks he's invincible.'
Emily nodded, adjusting her lab coat over her fitted scrubs. 'I've reviewed his scans. With disciplined therapy, he could be game-ready by playoffs. But it'll take commitment.'
Harlan chuckled dryly. 'Good luck selling that to Maddox. He's the league's leading scorer when healthy—cocky as hell, but the kid's got talent. Locker room's down the hall. He's expecting you.'
She found Ryan Maddox in the players' lounge, sprawled on a leather couch with his leg propped on an ottoman. At twenty-eight, he was all chiseled muscle and brooding intensity, his dark hair tousled, green eyes sharp under thick lashes. A faded scar traced his jawline, adding to his bad-boy allure. Team photos lined the walls, his face dominating many, stick raised in victory. He glanced up as she entered, sizing her up with a smirk.
'You the new physio?' Ryan asked, his voice laced with skepticism. He didn't bother sitting up.
'Emily Harper,' she replied evenly, extending her hand. 'I'll be handling your rehab.'
He ignored the handshake, flexing his injured knee experimentally. 'Look, sweetheart, I appreciate the effort, but I'm good. Been skating on my own. Doc says light drills soon anyway.'
Emily's jaw tightened at the 'sweetheart,' but she kept her professional smile. 'Mr. Maddox, solo training risks permanent damage. Your ACL needs structured strengthening—eccentric exercises, proprioception drills. We start today.'
Ryan snorted, finally swinging his legs down. He towered over her at six-foot-three, his presence filling the room. 'Call me Ryan. And I've got this. Played through worse. Team needs me on the ice, not baby steps.'
'The team needs you healthy, not benched for life,' she countered, gesturing toward the training room. 'After you.'
Grumbling, he followed her into the state-of-the-art space: padded tables, resistance bands, ultrasound machines gleaming under fluorescent lights. Emily directed him to the main table, helping him roll up his track pants to expose the knee brace. She palpated the joint gently, noting the swelling and weakness.
'Feels fine,' he muttered as her fingers probed.
'It won't if you push it,' she said firmly, grabbing a resistance band. 'Leg extensions first. Ten reps, slow eccentric phase.'
Ryan took the band, but his form was sloppy—rushing the motion, cheating the control. 'This is kid stuff. I need real work, like squats or something.'
'Not yet. Rushing re-injury is your biggest threat. The Grizzlies are counting on you for playoffs—'
'On me?' He dropped the band, standing abruptly. Inches separated them now, his broad chest heaving. 'Damn right. Without Maddox, you think we win the Cup? I don't need some rookie physio telling me how to heal.'
Emily stepped closer, refusing to back down, her blue eyes flashing. 'Rookie? I've rehabbed All-Stars back faster than your ego can inflate. But you? You're a liability right now—stubborn, reckless. Keep dismissing me, and you'll watch the Cup from the stands.'
His laugh was low, dangerous. 'Big words for a girl playing doctor. You think you know hockey pain?' He leaned in, heat radiating from his body, the faint musk of his cologne mixing with arena chill.
The air crackled. Emily's pulse raced, anger blending with something electric. 'I know arrogance ends careers. Prove me wrong—follow the plan.'
Ryan's gaze dropped to her lips, then back to her eyes. 'Or what? You'll make me?' His hand shot out, gripping her wrist—not hard, but firm. The touch ignited sparks up her arm.
She yanked free, but he caught her waist, pulling her flush against him. 'Let go,' she breathed, even as her body betrayed her, warmth pooling low.
'You first,' he growled, his mouth crashing down on hers.
The kiss was fire—raw, demanding. His lips claimed hers with bruising intensity, tongue sweeping in to conquer. Emily gasped, hands fisting his shirt, shoving and pulling in equal measure. He tasted of mint and defiance, his injured leg pressing between hers for balance as he deepened it, groaning into her mouth.
She broke away first, cheeks flushed, chest heaving. 'What the hell was that?'
Ryan's eyes darkened with hunger. 'That was you challenging me. Admit it—you felt it too.'
Emily stepped back, smoothing her hair, heart thundering. Her reputation hinged on this job, on taming players like him. But that kiss... it promised chaos. 'Session's over. We'll resume tomorrow—if you behave.'
He smirked, adjusting his pants subtly. 'Oh, Doc, behaving's not my style.'
As she turned away, Emily's mind reeled. Ryan Maddox was a storm—arrogant, magnetic, dangerous. Helping him could make her a legend or burn her career to ash. And ignoring the heat between them? Impossible.
