Chapter One: Whispers of the Full Moon

The coastal town of Ebon Cove clung to the rugged cliffs like a secret whispered by the sea. Fog rolled in from the restless Atlantic each evening, wrapping the narrow cobblestone streets in a perpetual hush. Lanterns flickered along the waterfront, casting golden pools on the damp stone, while the distant crash of waves provided a rhythmic soundtrack to the town's hidden pulse. It was the eve of the Full Moon Festival, and the air buzzed with anticipation. Strings of lanterns swayed between weathered buildings, and vendors hawked moon-shaped pastries and silver trinkets from colorful stalls. Locals spoke in low tones about the old legends—the blood moon that stirred beasts and shadows alike—but most dismissed them as folklore to draw tourists.

Sabine Harper wiped the scarred oak bar with a rag, her dark hair tied back in a practical ponytail that did little to tame its waves. At twenty-eight, she had poured her heart into The Salty Fang, the tavern her late father had left her. The place smelled of aged whiskey, fresh lime, and the faint brine of the ocean that seeped through every crack. Tonight, it thrummed with early festival-goers: fishermen in oilskins nursing pints, couples laughing over plates of crab cakes, and a rowdy table of locals debating the best spots for moon viewing.

"Another round for table five, Sabine!" called out Mira, her part-time waitress, balancing trays laden with frothy ales. Sabine nodded, her green eyes sharp as she pulled taps with practiced ease. She loved this chaos—the clink of glasses, the hum of voices weaving stories. It grounded her in a town where rumors of the supernatural lingered like the fog. Werewolf packs in the hills? Vampires haunting the old lighthouse? Sabine chuckled inwardly. She had seen enough drunken brawls to know the real monsters were human folly.

As the door swung open, admitting a gust of salty wind, Sabine glanced up. A man stepped inside, his presence commanding the room like a sudden eclipse. Tall and lean, with porcelain skin that gleamed under the lantern light, he wore a tailored black coat that spoke of old money. His hair was raven-dark, swept back elegantly, and his eyes—piercing silver—swept the bar with quiet intensity. He moved with a predator's grace, settling onto a stool at the far end.

"Evening," Sabine said, sliding a coaster his way. "What'll it be?"

He met her gaze, a slow smile curving his lips, revealing just a hint of fang-like canines. "Red wine, if you have something robust. And your name, if you'll indulge me."

"Sabine," she replied, arching an eyebrow as she poured from a reserved bottle. "And you're...?"

"Darius," he said, his voice smooth as aged velvet. "Charmed."

The air between them thickened, charged with an unspoken pull, as the moon climbed higher outside. Little did Sabine know, this elegant stranger was the first thread in a tapestry of rivalry that would unravel her world.
