About this book

Summary

David Morrow built his suburban life like a fortress—steady job, loving family, every secret sealed behind concrete and silence. But someone has been leaving messages at his door, each one closer to the buried truth he's spent seventeen years hiding. Now his daughter has vanished, a neighbor is circling with dangerous knowledge, and the night is running out. Every lie David told to protect his family might be the very thing tearing it apart.

Chapter 1

Chapter One: 3:17 A.M.

The first knock sounds timid, like a kid's dare. The second one is harder. I’m halfway to the door before I realize I’m not dreaming.

I flick on the porch light. Suburbia at this hour looks like a paused movie—sprinklers ticking, a ribbon of fog strung low over the cul-de-sac. No one on the porch. No car at the curb. The kind of quiet you can bruise yourself against.

“Hello?” My voice evaporates.

I go to shut the door and feel the drag of the doormat catching. Something thin braced underneath. I lift the mat and there it is: a 4x6 photo and a Post-it.

The photo is my daughter, Mia, caught mid-step, lemon-yellow backpack slung over one shoulder, climbing into a metallic gray Lexus. The angle is grainy Ring-camera. The partial plate reads 3LD—enough to recognize.

The note says: Ask him about Ridgefield.

The porch light hums. My heart does something worse.

I call Mia. Straight to voicemail. I text her. Nothing. Upstairs, her bed is made with the exactness of a stage set.

I am suddenly, violently awake.
