About this book

Summary

A covert strike team hunts a brutal cartel boss through border markets, mountain ridges, and a fortified hacienda. As the mission spirals into a personal reckoning, each operator must decide what weight they’re willing to carry to bring the Ram to his knees—and who they’ll be after the dust clears.

Chapter 1

Chapter One: The Postcard

The postcard shows a desert town under a blue-hot sky, the mountains like the backs of sleeping whales. In black marker, someone scrawled: We found him. The stamp is crooked. The ink smears like a thumbprint.

Maya Soria keeps the postcard in the flap of her body armor, right where the plate stops and skin begins. When she breathes, the edge scratches her ribs. She knows this is sentimental and she knows it’s dangerous, and she keeps it anyway.

They call him El Carnero. The Ram. He’s not the biggest, not the richest—but he is the one who told a room full of teenagers to kneel and look at the ceiling because mercy distracts the hands. He is the one who carved silence into a town. He is the one who left a phone on a kitchen table and let a mother listen.

Maya sleeps. Wakes. Eats in short bites. They move.

That’s the thing about special operations: the waiting is a second skin. The violence happens quick; the waiting happens forever. The postcard presses into her as if reminding her that forever ends.
