Chapter One: The Map That Refuses to Lie
The map did not look like much: cracked vellum, faded ink, a smell of salt that had outlived continents. By afternoon light, the lines were ordinary. Under a tilted desk lamp, they shifted—edges running together like tidewater reclaiming a footprint. Each time Mara Singh pressed down a corner, the edges crept back to where they wanted to be.
Her father had drawn those lines. He named the breathing seam The Hollow Tide and left home saying he would come back with daylight under his nails. He didn’t.
At the restoration table, she coaxed the paper flat. Across the bottom margin, hidden under a bandage of glue and scratchings, she found a note in his neat block letters: Trust the wind-lines. Water lies. The wind remembers.
Corporate logos had been stamped across the copy she submitted for funding. Rusk Biologics had smiled at biodiversity. Investors had asked if the secret would be reproducible. Mara kept her face carved into a channel: enough to carry a boat, nothing more.
At night, when the lamp made the map drift, she cupped it in her hands and whispered the names she would not say aloud. Basalt. Undertow. Father.
Then she closed the lab, hauled the roll into her pack, and walked toward the only appointment that mattered.
