About this book

Summary

A corporate cover-up is rotting a city from the inside out, and the one journalist who got closest to proving it has disappeared without a trace. Now Claire Marchetti, a battle-hardened metro editor with her own buried compromises, must rally a splintering newsroom against a deadline that won't wait. Competing reporters circle like sharks. The paper's own ownership chain leads somewhere dark. Every source has a price—and Claire is running out of currency to pay it.

Chapter 1

Chapter One: The Empty Desk

Gideon York’s chair wheels still quivered when Elise Markham walked into the newsroom. It was a weird tick of memory; she’d know that loose wheel in a hurricane. The mug with his black coffee ring sat like a dark eye, open and surprised by its own emptiness.

“He left a voicemail,” said Jax Patel, hovering with a laptop tucked under his arm. “Said he was ‘stepping away.’ No notice. No draft.”

Elise looked at the whiteboard. Hallowell Dynamics—Gideon’s leviathan—still bracketed the top of the list. Under it: procurement, lab tests, whistleblower K, rival outlet The Ledger sniffing at the edges. He’d been days away from something big. Now his desk was a hollow.

Cassidy Noor leaned on a cubicle wall, arms crossed. An unruffled ache fluttered under her boredom. “We can’t just shove that into archive. The Ledger posted a teaser last night. It’s thin, but they’ll pad it by noon.”

Theo Rangel arrived breathless, hair not yet flattened by the day. “I’ve still got K’s burner, but she’s spooked. Gideon was her anchor.”

Elise steadied herself with the routines. “No panic. We’ve been here before.”

That was half a lie and half a prayer. Ren Vale, their intern, lifted a hand. “I have a few OSINT angles. If we can triangulate serials from municipal photos, we can—”

Cassidy sniffed. “Or we can, I don’t know, report?”

Elise held up a palm. “We do both. We do it right. We do it now.”
