About this book

Summary

A dying sea turtle carries the only chart to a sunken vault no one has opened in a thousand years—and its heartbeat is fading. Captain Maren Doss, a disgraced navigator with nothing left to trade but her skill, assembles a desperate crew to follow the ancient creature across treacherous waters before its shell goes dark forever. Rival hunters close in, monsoons shatter their course, and the ocean itself seems determined to bury what was never meant to be found.

Chapter 1

Chapter One: The Greatback

We found it where the shoals went pale and the morning burned on broken glass: a turtle the size of a barge, stranded in a notch of coral. Its shell was a black hill striped by pale scars. At first I thought they were scratches from ship ribs or reefs, but Brother Caldus laid a palm on the lines and his eyebrows went high.

“Carvings,” he said, reverent. “A chart—older than our tongue.”

Captain Rook Halvern’s grin showed the gap where a blade had once argued with his front tooth. “The sea draws its own maps now? We’ll take that bet.”

Sorrel Nix, our cartographer, already had chalk out, tracing the arching grooves and intersecting stars. “These aren’t random. See the compass rosette here? And this gullwing curve? It’s a current.”

The turtle hissed wet air, eyes like polished stones. Pella Quinn squinted at it. “She won’t last long cooking in this pan.”

“We’ll shove her to water,” Rook said, “then lash lines to the shell and ride the map she carries.”

Keegan Pike didn’t hide his whisper. “Or we could take the shell and carry it instead.”

Rook’s grin died. “You’ll ride what breathes, Pike. Or I’ll leave you teaching crabs to read.”

We shoved. The Greatback slid free with a slow grace and, once afloat, turned her ancient head toward blue.
