Chapter 1
Chapter One: Timeout
The countdown lands on Mara’s screen while her daughter is brushing her teeth, humming through toothpaste foam and the vibrations of the washing machine. Seventy-two hours, blinking in polite white text over the dark: ORION DEAD MAN SWITCH—ARCHIVE OR CITY—LAZARUS VAULT. She taps return with the tip of a chipped pinky nail and a thumbnail photo blossoms: a water plant ten miles south, culverts like steel ribs, the quiet geometry of a place designed to never be noticed.
She hasn’t seen ORION in three years and no one has seen him alive in one. He used to wear the smell of solder and green tea, and his laughter was a stutter that swung out into the open like a door on a windy day. He taught her the first rule of intrusion: you’re not slipping past machines—you’re slipping past plans. Everyone plans to look at the wrong thing.
The timer says 71:57:11 by the time Maia spits and asks for a glass. Mara catches her reflection in the black bezel of the monitor. Evidence of a life: a stack of daycare art, a fox plush on the tower, unpaid parking tickets like a paper fan. She hands Maia water, cold, clear, unthinking, and feels her own throat lock.
If ORION set this, it’s not theater. It’s a fuse.
