Chapter 1: The Perfect Leaf
The morning sun painted the garden in gold and green, and Rosie the ladybug was on a mission.
She crawled along a twisty vine, her shiny red wings folded neatly on her back. Her six little legs moved quickly over the bumpy bark.
"Today is the day," she said to herself. "Today I will find the perfect leaf."
Rosie had been searching for three whole days. She wanted a leaf that was soft but not too soft. Green but not too green. Sunny but with just a little shade for afternoon naps.
She passed a crinkly brown leaf. Too old.
She passed a tiny sprout leaf. Too small.
She passed a leaf with holes in it. Too holey.
"Maybe near the old fence," Rosie thought. "Nobody goes there anymore."
She made her way toward the corner of the garden where the wooden fence met the stone wall. Cobwebs stretched between the posts like dusty curtains. Most bugs stayed away from this spot.
But Rosie had heard there was a beautiful big leaf growing in the shadows there—a leaf nobody had claimed.
As she got closer, she heard something strange.
A small sound. A scared sound.
"Mmmmph! Mmmmph!"
Rosie stopped. Her antennae wiggled.
