Chapter 1: The Teeth of the World

The ocean didn't boil. That was the part nobody expected.

When the Lattice first emerged from the Mariana Trench in the autumn of 2089, the prevailing assumption among the world's scientific community was thermal. Something that active, that energetic, converting matter at the molecular level—surely it would generate heat. Surely the Pacific would warm, steam, eventually cook. The models were elegant, the math was sound, and every single prediction was wrong.

The water went still instead.

Linnea Moreau watched the first satellite feeds from her laboratory at the Institut de Génétique in Lyon, her coffee growing cold in her hand. The Pacific's surface had turned glassy in a widening circle around the epicenter, as if the ocean itself had been stunned into silence. No waves. No currents. Just a mirror stretching to the horizon, and beneath it, something rewriting the fundamental architecture of matter with the patience of a glacier and the precision of a scalpel.

Within weeks, the Lattice had a name, a Wikipedia page, and fourteen competing theories about its origin. Within months, it had consumed an area the size of France. The converted seabed wasn't destroyed—that was the unsettling part. It was replaced. Where basalt and sediment had been, there now existed structures of bewildering geometric complexity, crystalline lattices (hence the name) that defied easy categorization. They weren't organic. They weren't mineral. They were something else entirely, something that didn't fit into any taxonomy human science had ever devised.

Linnea's specialty was adaptive genetics—the study of how organisms rewrote their own code in response to environmental pressure. She'd spent a decade mapping the epigenetic pathways that allowed extremophile bacteria to survive in volcanic vents, in Antarctic ice, in the irradiated ruins of Chernobyl. She was good at her work. Quiet about it, mostly. She published in journals that maybe four hundred people on the planet read with any regularity, attended conferences in university auditoriums that smelled of industrial carpet and stale pastry, and went home to the apartment she shared with her younger brother.

Sully was twenty-six and still figuring things out, which was Linnea's diplomatic way of describing a young man who had changed his university major four times, worked briefly as a bicycle courier, a bartender, and a mushroom forager, and who currently spent most of his time building elaborate hydroponic systems in their shared kitchen. He was brilliant in the way that unfocused people often are—capable of extraordinary insight when something caught his attention, and utterly useless the rest of the time.

"You're staring at disaster footage again," Sully said, leaning over her shoulder. He smelled like basil and the nutrient solution he used for his lettuce towers. "That's not healthy."

"It's not disaster footage. It's data."

"It's the end of the world, Lin. Same thing."

He wasn't wrong, though Linnea bristled at his casualness. The projections were clear. The Lattice was accelerating. Its rate of expansion followed a curve that the mathematicians at CERN had modeled with increasing desperation, and the curve bent upward like a hockey stick. At its current trajectory, total planetary conversion would occur within five years. Not the destruction of human civilization. Not the collapse of ecosystems. The complete molecular restructuring of every atom on Earth.

The United Nations convened emergency sessions. Governments that had spent decades squabbling over carbon credits and territorial waters suddenly found common cause. The Lattice couldn't be bombed—they tried. Nuclear weapons detonated on the converted seabed were simply absorbed, their energy incorporated into the structure like food. It couldn't be poisoned, frozen, or reasoned with. It had no apparent intelligence, no communication, no demands. It simply converted, with the mindless efficiency of a chemical reaction.

Project Severance was announced on a Tuesday in March 2091. Linnea remembered the day because Sully had finally gotten his Thai basil to fruit, and he'd been so excited that he'd almost missed the broadcast.

Five ark ships. Ten thousand colonists each. Five different star systems. No expectation of communication. No expectation of reunion. The human species would scatter itself like seeds in a wind, and hope that something, somewhere, took root.

The scale of it was staggering. The ships had been under construction in orbit for two years already—a fact that told Linnea the world's governments had known the truth long before they'd shared it with the public. Each ark was a self-contained world: hydroponics bays, manufacturing facilities, genetic banks, cryo chambers for the vast majority of passengers who would sleep through the decades-long journey. The ships were named after famous vessels of rescue and exploration. The Endurance. The Kon-Tiki. The Carpathia. The Shackleton. The Amundsen.

Linnea did not volunteer.

She wanted to be clear about that, later, when people assumed she had. She did not raise her hand, did not submit an application, did not stand in the desperate queues that formed outside selection centers in every major city. She went to work. She studied her extremophiles. She helped Sully with his hydroponics and pretended that the world was not being eaten beneath their feet.

The notification came by courier—an actual physical document, hand-delivered by a woman in a UN uniform who waited patiently while Linnea read it three times.

"There's been a mistake," Linnea said.

"There hasn't, Dr. Moreau. Your expertise in adaptive genetics has been identified as mission-critical for the Carpathia's colonial genetics program. You've been conscripted under the Emergency Talent Allocation Protocol."

"Conscripted."

"Yes, ma'am."

"I didn't agree to this."

"Agreement isn't required, ma'am. The protocol—"

"I know what the protocol says." Linnea set the document down on her kitchen table, next to a jar of Sully's homemade pesto. "My brother. Is there a berth for my brother?"

The courier's expression didn't change, but something shifted behind her eyes. A weariness. She'd had this conversation before, Linnea realized. Hundreds of times, probably.

"Berth allocations are determined by the Selection Committee based on skill requirements and genetic diversity parameters. I'm not authorized to discuss individual cases."

"He's twenty-six. He's healthy. He's—"

"Dr. Moreau, I strongly recommend you report to the Lyon Processing Center within forty-eight hours. Transportation to the launch facility will be arranged from there."

The courier left. Linnea sat at the kitchen table for a long time, the document in front of her, the smell of basil in the air.

She fought it. Of course she fought it. She filed appeals, contacted every bureaucrat whose name she could find, called in favors from colleagues who had connections. She even tried to refuse outright, to simply not show up, but two military police officers appeared at her door on the morning of the second day and explained, with polite firmness, that noncompliance would result in her forcible transport and Sully's permanent removal from all future allocation lists.

That was the knife. Not the threat to her—the threat to him. As long as she cooperated, Sully remained in the lottery for the remaining ships. If she ran, they'd blacklist him.

"Go," Sully said. He was sitting on the kitchen floor, his back against the cabinet, his long legs stretched out across the tile. He looked younger than twenty-six in that moment. He looked like the boy who'd followed her around the garden when they were children, asking the names of every insect. "Lin, you have to go."

"I'm not leaving you."

"You're not leaving me. You're going ahead." He smiled, and it was the worst thing she'd ever seen, that smile, because it was genuine. He actually believed it. "I'll get on one of the other ships. The fourth or fifth. I'll find you."

"Sully, the ships are going to different star systems. They're light-years apart. We'll never—"

"Then we'll never. But you'll be alive, and I'll be alive, and that's better than both of us being dead, which is what happens if you stay here and the Lattice eats France."

She packed a single bag. The weight limit was fifteen kilograms. She brought clothes, her research drives, a photograph of their parents, and a small glass jar of Sully's dried basil. He laughed when he saw her tuck it into the bag.

"You hate basil," he said.

"I hate fresh basil. Dried is fine."

"You hate all basil, Lin."

"Then I'll grow some and think of you every time I smell it and feel mildly nauseous."

He hugged her at the door. She memorized the pressure of his arms, the specific geography of his shoulder blades, the way he always held on two seconds longer than she expected.

"I'll find you," he said again.

She didn't trust herself to answer.

The Lyon Processing Center was a converted exhibition hall, vast and echoing, filled with thousands of people in various stages of documentation, medical screening, and controlled panic. Linnea moved through it like a sleepwalker, submitting to blood draws and retinal scans and psychological evaluations that she answered with mechanical precision. Yes, she understood the mission parameters. No, she had no medical conditions that would preclude cryo suspension. Yes, she was willing to fulfill her assigned role. No, she did not wish to make a final recorded message.

That last one was a lie. She wished it desperately. But she knew that if she sat in front of a camera and tried to say goodbye to Sully, she would break apart, and she couldn't afford to break apart. Not yet. Not here.

The transport to the launch facility took three days—a military convoy through a Europe that was already starting to fray. They passed through towns where the shops were shuttered and the streets were empty, and through others where the streets were full of people who threw rocks at the convoy and screamed things that Linnea tried not to hear. The chosen and the left behind. The lottery of survival, and everyone knew the odds.

The launch facility was in Kazakhstan, at Baikonur, though it bore little resemblance to the historical site. It had been expanded into a sprawling complex of launch pads, processing centers, and shuttle hangars, all focused on the single task of ferrying people and supplies to the arks in orbit. The Carpathia was the third ship, scheduled for launch after the Endurance and the Kon-Tiki, which had already departed.

Linnea caught glimpses of the ship on monitors during her processing—a massive, elongated structure bristling with solar collectors and drive assemblies, hanging in orbit like a splinter of civilization against the black. It was beautiful in the way that desperate things are beautiful: all function, no ornament, every line and angle devoted to the single purpose of keeping ten thousand human beings alive across the void.

She met Jun Tanaka on the shuttle up. He was the Carpathia's Chief Medical Officer, a compact Japanese-American man in his fifties with close-cropped gray hair and the careful, unhurried movements of someone who had spent a career making life-and-death decisions and had learned to make them slowly. He sat next to her on the shuttle, introduced himself with a handshake that was firm without being aggressive, and said, "You look like you'd rather be anywhere else."

"Is it that obvious?"

"You're the only person on this shuttle who isn't either crying or pretending to be brave. You just look angry."

"I am angry."

"Good. Angry people survive." He offered her a packet of shuttle rations—compressed nutrient bars that tasted like cardboard and obligation. "I read your work on extremophile epigenetics. The paper on Deinococcus radiodurans was particularly impressive."

"You read my papers?"

"I read everything. I'm going to be responsible for the medical welfare of ten thousand people for the next forty years. I want to know who I'm working with."

Linnea found herself liking Jun despite her determination to like nothing about this experience. He had a quiet competence that was neither arrogant nor falsely modest, and he didn't try to comfort her. He simply acknowledged the reality of their situation and moved forward within it, like a man walking through a storm who has accepted that he will get wet.

The Carpathia was larger than she'd expected and smaller than she'd hoped. The habitable sections were a fraction of the ship's total volume—most of it was cryo storage, drive systems, and the massive hydroponics bays that would sustain the waking crew. The corridors were narrow and utilitarian, painted in shades of gray and pale blue that some psychologist had presumably determined were calming. They were not calming. They were the colors of a hospital, and Linnea had never found hospitals calming.

Her quarters were a cabin roughly the size of a bathroom stall, containing a fold-down bunk, a storage locker, and a small desk with a terminal. She set her bag on the bunk, placed the jar of dried basil on the desk, and sat down.

Through the small porthole—a luxury she hadn't expected—she could see Earth. It looked normal from here. Blue and white and green, swirled with clouds, heartbreakingly beautiful. You couldn't see the Lattice from orbit. You couldn't see the glassy stillness spreading across the Pacific, or the crystalline structures growing on the seabed, or the millions of people who would never leave.

You couldn't see Sully.

The launch—or rather, the departure, since the Carpathia was already in orbit and simply needed to engage its drive—was scheduled for three days later. Those three days were a blur of orientation briefings, system checks, and the organized chaos of ten thousand people being processed into cryo pods. Linnea's first cryo shift wasn't scheduled for six months; as a key specialist, she was part of the initial waking crew that would oversee the ship's departure and early transit.

She was on the observation deck when the drive engaged. The Carpathia didn't roar or shudder or do any of the dramatic things that spacecraft did in old films. It simply began to move, the stars outside the viewport shifting almost imperceptibly as the ship oriented itself toward 82 Eridani and began to accelerate.

Earth shrank. That was the only way to describe it. One moment it filled the viewport, a world, a home, everything that had ever mattered. And then it was smaller. And smaller. A marble. A bright point. A memory.

Linnea pressed her hand against the cold glass and watched it go.

Somewhere down there, Sully was looking up. She was certain of it. He was standing in their kitchen, or in the garden, or on the roof of their building, and he was looking up at a sky that held one fewer star than it had the night before.

"I'll find you," he'd said.

The observation deck was crowded, but nobody spoke. Two hundred people stood in silence and watched their world disappear, and Linnea understood, in that silence, that every single one of them was leaving someone behind. Every single one of them had a Sully. The specifics varied—a parent, a child, a lover, a friend—but the wound was the same. They were all bleeding from the same place.

She let herself cry, finally, in the privacy of that shared grief. The tears floated in the low gravity, drifting from her cheeks like tiny planets, catching the light of a sun that was already beginning to look like any other star.
