Chapter One: The Threshold
The Odyssey floated at the edge of dawn over a blue-white Earth, a bright speck against a thin ribbon of atmosphere. Floodlights glared along its hull. Cameras beamed the image to billions below. Inside, a low hum thrummed through the deck as the warp rings wound up toward a tone Isla Thorne had dreamed of since she was a child.
“Camera two loves your left side,” Rory Sloane said, sliding into the pilot couch. He wore his harness loose, as if he might jump out of his own skin and take the ship with him.
“It can send flowers after,” Isla said. She didn’t look away from the status cascade. “Field coils at ninety percent. Victor, confirm secure access to the ring interlocks.”
Commander Victor Hale’s voice came flat through the bridge. “Secure. Safety interlock handshake confirmed. Earth-based oversight locked in.” He didn’t look at the cameras either. He looked at Isla, then at the viewport, at the growing smear of dawn. “We do this by the book.”
“We wrote the book,” Isla said, and meant it. She’d spent her nights building test lattices with Anil in the lab, running simulations until the numbers stopped making sense. And that one night, years ago, when a prototype had let go and bleached a circle into the lab floor. Anil had pulled her out by the collar, two burns across his hands that never faded. She traced them with her eyes now, where he stood at the engineering station.
“You can still shut it down,” Anil Kapoor said quietly, as if he knew what she was thinking. “No one would call it a failure.”
“Someone would,” Rory said. “Me.”
Isla swallowed the heat in her chest. She had signed her name on a line that meant something like this could happen. She also knew the numbers, and how they bent under pressure. “We’re ready,” she said. “Begin the count.”
Victor nodded. He toggled the shipwide. “This is Commander Hale. Warp test begins in one minute.” He paused. “Whatever happens, we stick to procedure.”
Isla thought of the lab floor, of white circles, of scars that never went away. She counted with the others under her breath as the numbers fell, the last quiet before history.
“Three,” Rory said.
“Two,” Anil said.
“One,” Isla said.
Victor put his hand on the armrest and the Odyssey stepped toward a future no one had tested in air.
