Chapter 1: The Big Storm
Polly the squirrel woke up to a crash of thunder that shook her whole tree house. Rain pounded against her window like a hundred tiny drums. Lightning lit up the sky in bright white flashes.
"Oh my whiskers!" Polly squeaked, pulling her acorn blanket over her head.
The storm howled and roared all night long. Wind bent the trees sideways. Branches snapped and tumbled to the ground. Polly stayed curled up in her cozy nest, waiting for morning.
When the sun finally peeked through the clouds, Polly scrambled outside to check on her acorn stash. Her heart sank. The hole where she kept her winter food was empty!
"No, no, no!" she cried.
Polly looked around the forest. Acorns were scattered everywhere—rolling down paths, stuck in bushes, and tumbling toward the bottom of Mudslide Hill. The storm had knocked them all loose from every tree and hiding spot in the whole forest.
Polly scurried down the hill as fast as her little legs could carry her. At the very bottom, she found something amazing. Thousands and thousands of acorns had piled up against a big rock. It was the biggest pile of acorns Polly had ever seen!
"Wow!" she gasped. Then she looked up at Mudslide Hill. It was very tall. It was very steep. And after all that rain, it was very, very slippery.
