Chapter 1: Nightside
The drill bit snapped at 14:07 station time, and Diana Katz swore in two languages.
She pulled her hands back from the core sampler and watched the broken tungsten carbide tip spin lazily in Mercury's negligible gravity before settling into the regolith. Three weeks of calibration, and the bit had lasted exactly forty-one minutes against the iron-rich basalt of Caloris Planitia's western rim.
"That's the fourth one this cycle," she muttered into her helmet mic.
"Copy that," came Frank Olsson's voice from inside the habitat. "I told you the subsurface density models were off. The mantle intrusions out there are harder than anything we drilled on Vesta."
"Your models said the hardness would peak at eight on Mohs. This is reading closer to nine. There's corundum in this matrix, Frank. Actual corundum."
A pause. She could picture him at his workstation, his broad Scandinavian face creased in thought, one hand absently rubbing the blond stubble he refused to shave on what he called "principle" and she called "laziness."
"Corundum would change the mineralization thesis entirely," he said.
"I know."
"You sure it's not instrument error?"
"I'm sure."
Diana crouched beside the drill assembly and began extracting the broken bit. Around her, Mercury's surface stretched in every direction like a charcoal sea frozen mid-wave. Nightside Station sat in the permanent shadow of the planet's slow rotation, nestled in a shallow depression between two ancient crater rims. No sunlight had touched this ground in decades. The only illumination came from the station's floodlights, which carved white circles out of the darkness and threw hard shadows across the regolith.
Above her, the stars didn't twinkle. They burned steady and fierce, diamond-hard points in a sky so black it seemed to have texture. She'd been on Mercury for seven months now, and the sky still made her chest tight if she looked at it too long. It was the most honest sky she'd ever seen. No atmosphere to soften it, no light pollution to dim it. Just the raw universe, unfiltered.
She sealed the broken bit in a sample bag—even the failures were data—and stood. Her EVA suit was a marvel of engineering: multi-layered thermal insulation rated for the extremes of Mercury's surface, where temperatures swung from negative 180 in the shadow to over 400 in the sun. In the permanent dark where they worked, the cold was the enemy. Her suit's heating elements hummed against her skin, a constant low vibration she'd stopped noticing months ago.
Nightside Station was small. Two pressurized habitat modules connected by a flexible tunnel, a power plant running on a compact fission reactor, a communications array, a geological laboratory, and the transport crawler—a six-wheeled vehicle the size of a small bus that served as their lifeline to the supply cache sixty kilometers south. The whole operation was funded by Helion Extraction, a mining conglomerate that had pivoted from asteroid mining to planetary resource surveys. Diana and Frank were the science team. Diana had taken the posting because Mercury was the last frontier in inner solar system geology. Everything else had been mapped, sampled, catalogued. Mercury was still wild. Its core was enormous relative to its size—nearly 85 percent of the planet's radius—and the geological implications were extraordinary. The tidal forces from the Sun had done things to this world's interior that no one fully understood.
She climbed the short ladder to the habitat airlock and cycled through. The outer door sealed, atmosphere hissed in, and the inner door opened to reveal the cramped but functional interior of Module A. Frank was at his workstation, exactly as she'd pictured him, except he was eating a protein bar with the focused intensity of a man who had not yet had his coffee.
"Corundum," he said, pointing the protein bar at her. "If you're right, it means the aluminum differentiation in this region is completely different from the orbital spectrometry predictions."
"I am right." Diana unsealed her helmet and set it on the rack. Her dark hair, cut short for practicality, was matted with sweat. She was thirty-eight, lean and angular, with the kind of face that looked severe in photographs but animated in conversation. Her eyes were brown, sharp, and perpetually narrowed, as if she were always squinting at something just slightly too far away. "I'll need to run the sample through the XRD to confirm, but the hardness and cleavage are consistent."
"This could push the survey timeline back by weeks."
"Or make it more valuable. If there's a corundum-bearing layer at accessible depth, Helion will be very interested."
Frank grunted. He was forty-three, built like a refrigerator, and had the easygoing temperament of a man who'd spent fifteen years on various off-world postings and had made peace with the fact that his life would always be measured in mission cycles. He was a planetary physicist by training, a competent field geologist by necessity, and Diana's only company for the past seven months. They got along well enough. He talked too much about his ex-wife in Gothenburg, and she talked too little about anything personal, and they'd found a rhythm in that imbalance.
"Miriam's going to want an updated report," Frank said.
"Miriam always wants an updated report."
Miriam Saldana was their mission controller, stationed aboard the orbital platform Kepler Ring, which circled Mercury in a polar orbit. She was the voice in their ears, the eyes in the sky, and the bureaucratic filter between them and Helion's corporate offices back on Earth. Diana had never met her in person. She knew Miriam was forty-six, had a background in aerospace operations, and possessed the particular brand of calm, measured competence that mission controllers cultivated the way monks cultivated silence.
"I'll write it up after I run the XRD," Diana said. She pulled a water pouch from the dispenser and drank. The water was recycled, as all water was out here, and it had a faint mineral taste she'd stopped minding. "What's the seismic array showing?"
"Quiet. Background noise is nominal. There was a minor tremor about six hours ago—magnitude 1.2—but that's consistent with tidal flexing. Nothing unusual."
Mercury was seismically active, though not in the way Earth was. It had no tectonic plates. Instead, the planet was slowly shrinking as its massive core cooled, producing thrust faults and surface scarps that could generate significant quakes. Tidal forces from the Sun added another layer of stress. The seismic array Diana had deployed around the station was one of the most sensitive instruments ever placed on Mercury's surface, capable of detecting tremors that would be lost in the noise on any other world.
"I want to look at the waveform data from the last week," Diana said. "There's been a pattern in the P-wave arrivals that doesn't match the standard tidal model."
"You and your patterns."
"Patterns are how we understand things, Frank."
"Patterns are how we convince ourselves we understand things. There's a difference."
She smiled despite herself. "Run the XRD for me while I pull the data?"
"I'm eating."
"You're always eating."
"I'm a large man on a small planet. My caloric needs are significant."
Diana shook her head and sat down at her own workstation. The habitat was efficient but not spacious—every surface served a purpose, every cabinet was labeled, every tool had a designated home. The walls were a neutral gray that Helion's interior designers had probably called "calming" and that Diana called "institutional." Small personal touches broke the monotony: Frank's collection of mission patches from previous postings, velcroed to the wall above his bunk; Diana's single framed photograph of her parents' house in the Negev, the desert light golden and warm, everything Mercury was not.
She pulled up the seismic data and began scrolling through the waveforms. The standard tidal signature was there—a slow, rhythmic pulse tied to Mercury's orbital mechanics. But layered beneath it, she'd been noticing something else. Faint, irregular, with a frequency profile that didn't match any natural source she could identify. It was probably nothing. Instrument artifact, maybe. Or some interaction between the array and the station's reactor. She'd been meaning to investigate it for days but kept getting pulled into the drilling program.
She flagged the anomalous waveforms and set up a filter to isolate them. The analysis would take a few hours. She stretched, feeling the low gravity make the motion feel languid and strange even after seven months, and went to help Frank with the XRD.
They worked in companionable silence for the next two hours. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed what Diana had suspected: the sample contained significant corundum, embedded in a matrix of iron-magnesium silicates. It was a finding that would rewrite the mineralogical models for this entire region of Mercury's surface.
"I need to go back out and get a deeper core," Diana said. "If this layer extends below five meters, it's not a surface deposit. It's a mantle expression."
"Tomorrow," Frank said. "You've been out for six hours already."
"I'm fine."
"Station protocols say—"
"I know what the protocols say. I helped write them."
"Then you know they say maximum eight hours EVA with a minimum twelve-hour rest period. You've got two hours of EVA time left, and that's not enough for a deep core."
He was right, and she knew it. The protocols existed for good reasons. EVA work on Mercury was physically demanding even in low gravity—the suits were heavy, the terrain was treacherous, and the margin for error was zero. A torn suit in the cold of the nightside meant death in minutes. A torn suit near the terminator, where the sun's heat began to creep, meant death in seconds.
"Fine," she said. "Tomorrow."
She ate dinner—rehydrated pasta with a sauce that the packaging optimistically called "Bolognese"—and reviewed her data while Frank watched a movie on his personal tablet with headphones in. The seismic filter analysis was still running. She checked the station's external monitors: all nominal. Temperature outside was negative 173 Celsius. Atmospheric pressure: effectively zero. Radiation levels: elevated but within acceptable limits for the nightside.
The terminator line—the boundary between Mercury's sunlit and shadowed hemispheres—was currently 847 kilometers to the east. Mercury rotated so slowly that the terminator moved across the surface at roughly walking pace: about three kilometers per hour. At that distance, it would take months to reach them. The station's position had been chosen with generous margins. They were deep in the nightside, far from any danger of solar exposure.
Diana noted the number, as she did every evening, the way a sailor might note the distance to shore. It was a habit born not of anxiety but of professional respect for the environment. Mercury was not a place that forgave carelessness.
She brushed her teeth, secured her workstation, and climbed into her bunk. The habitat's environmental systems hummed their lullaby—air recyclers, water processors, the steady thrum of the reactor. She closed her eyes.
Sleep came slowly, as it often did. The silence of Mercury was different from any silence she'd known on Earth or on the Moon or aboard the transit ship that had brought her here. It was absolute. No wind, no weather, no biosphere generating its endless background noise. Just the machines that kept her alive, and beyond them, nothing.
She dreamed of the Negev. Of heat and light and the sound of her mother calling her in for dinner. In the dream, the sun was warm and kind, the way it was supposed to be. Not the killing furnace that hung in Mercury's sky, close enough to fill a quarter of the horizon, bright enough to melt lead.
She woke to the sound of the world ending.
The noise came first—a deep, grinding roar that seemed to come from everywhere at once, transmitted through the habitat's structure rather than through air. The floor bucked beneath her. She was thrown from her bunk and hit the opposite wall, her shoulder taking the impact. Alarms shrieked. Red emergency lighting replaced the normal overheads. Something cracked—a sharp, structural sound that sent ice through her veins.
"Frank!" she shouted.
The shaking intensified. She could hear things breaking: equipment tearing free of mounts, storage containers crashing open, the horrible groan of habitat panels flexing beyond their design tolerances. She grabbed for a handhold and found one—the edge of a storage rack—and held on as the world shook.
It lasted thirty-one seconds. She counted. When you can't control anything else, you count.
Then it stopped. The silence that followed was worse than the noise, because it was full of the sounds of damage: hissing air, sparking electronics, and Frank Olsson screaming.
Diana pulled herself upright. The habitat was wrecked. Module A's ceiling had partially buckled, pressing down at an angle that reduced the headroom by a third. Equipment was everywhere—scattered, broken, floating in the low gravity before settling slowly to the tilted floor. The main lighting was out. Emergency strips along the baseboards cast everything in bloody red.
"Frank! Where are you?"
"Here—" His voice was tight with pain, coming from the far end of the module near the connecting tunnel. "My leg—something fell on my leg—"
She scrambled over debris to reach him. He was pinned beneath a storage unit that had torn free from the wall. It lay across his right leg at the shin. Even in the red light, she could see the angle was wrong.
"Don't move," she said. "I'm going to lift this off you."
"It's broken. I can feel it. It's broken bad, Diana."
"I know. Don't move."
The storage unit was heavy, but Mercury's gravity was only 38 percent of Earth's. She braced herself and lifted. Frank cried out as the weight came off his leg. She shoved the unit aside and knelt beside him.
His right tibia was fractured—she could see the deformity through his sleep clothes. Compound, possibly. There was blood soaking through the fabric. His face was gray, sheened with sweat.
"Okay," she said, forcing her voice into a steadiness she didn't feel. "Okay. I'm going to splint this. Don't move."
She found the medical kit—miraculously still in its wall mount—and went to work. The splinting was basic: immobilize the fracture, control the bleeding, manage the pain. She gave him an injection of analgesic from the kit and watched some of the tension leave his face.
"What the hell was that?" he gasped.
"Seismic event. A big one." She was already doing the mental math. The seismic array would have recorded it, if the array was still functioning. The magnitude had to be significant—6.0 or higher—to cause this kind of structural damage to a habitat designed for Mercury's conditions.
"The station—"
"I need to assess. Can you stay here?"
"I don't think I'm going anywhere."
She squeezed his shoulder and moved through the habitat, cataloguing damage with the systematic focus that was her default mode under stress. Module A: structural compromise, partial ceiling collapse, multiple system failures. She checked the atmosphere readings: pressure was holding, but she could hear a hiss from somewhere in the walls. A slow leak. Not immediately critical, but it would need to be found and patched.
She moved through the connecting tunnel to Module B. The tunnel itself was intact—the flexible design had absorbed the shaking—but Module B was in worse shape. The far wall had buckled inward, and two of the four atmospheric processing units were offline. The geological laboratory was destroyed. Her samples, her instruments, her seven months of meticulous work—scattered and broken.
She didn't let herself feel that. Not yet.
The communications array was her priority. She found the comm panel and powered it up. Static, then a carrier signal, then a voice.
"Nightside Station, this is Kepler Ring. Nightside Station, do you copy? Diana, Frank, please respond."
Miriam's voice. Calm, professional, but Diana could hear the thread of urgency beneath it.
"Kepler Ring, this is Nightside. We copy. We've sustained significant damage. Frank has a broken leg, possibly compound fracture of the right tibia. I'm assessing station integrity now. What do you have on the seismic event?"
A pause. "Diana, we registered a magnitude 7.1 event centered approximately ninety kilometers northeast of your position. Shallow focus, less than ten kilometers depth. It's the largest event we've recorded on Mercury."
"7.1," Diana repeated. She closed her eyes for a moment. "Miriam, I need you to run a structural assessment on the station using the external cameras. I'm seeing significant deformation in both modules."
"Already running it. Diana—" Another pause, longer this time. "I need you to check the crawler."
The crawler. Their vehicle. Their lifeline.
Diana suited up. It took longer than usual because her hands were shaking—adrenaline, she told herself, not fear—and because several pieces of her EVA equipment had been thrown around the module during the quake. She found her helmet under a collapsed shelf, checked it for damage, sealed it, and cycled through the airlock.
Outside, the floodlights were still working, though two of the six had shifted on their mounts and now pointed at odd angles, casting elongated shadows across the regolith. The ground itself looked different. New cracks ran across the surface like dark veins, some of them wide enough to swallow a boot. The shallow depression where the station sat seemed to have shifted—the southern rim was higher than she remembered, or the northern rim was lower.
She walked around the habitat modules, documenting damage with her suit camera. Module A had a visible buckle in its outer hull. Module B's far wall was deformed inward by nearly half a meter. The connecting tunnel was intact but stressed. The reactor housing appeared undamaged—small mercy.
Then she reached the crawler bay and stopped.
The transport crawler was on its side. The six-wheeled vehicle, which weighed nearly four metric tons even in Mercury's gravity, had been thrown onto its flank by the quake. Its left-side wheels pointed at the sky. The roll cage was bent. One of the solar shield panels had sheared off entirely.
Diana stood there for a long time, looking at it.
"Miriam," she said quietly. "The crawler is flipped."
Silence on the comm. Then: "Can you right it?"
"It weighs four tons. Even in Mercury gravity, that's over 1,500 kilograms effective. No. Not without equipment I don't have."
More silence. Diana could hear Miriam breathing, could hear the faint background hum of Kepler Ring's systems.
"Diana, I need to run some calculations. Please go back inside and tend to Frank. I'll contact you in thirty minutes."
"Miriam. What calculations?"
"Thirty minutes, Diana. Please."
Diana went back inside. She tended to Frank, who was floating in and out of a pain-medication haze. She found the atmospheric leak—a hairline crack in Module A's wall seam—and sealed it with emergency epoxy. She inventoried their supplies: water recycler functional, food rations for approximately three weeks, oxygen generation running on backup power, medical kit partially depleted.
Twenty-eight minutes later, Miriam's voice came through the comm.
"Diana, I need you to sit down."
"I'm sitting."
"The seismic event has caused significant ground displacement in your area. The station's position has shifted relative to the terminator line. Based on our orbital calculations, the new distance to the terminator is—" A pause. Diana heard the sound of Miriam swallowing. "—approximately 780 kilometers."
Diana did the math instantly. The terminator moved at roughly three kilometers per hour. 780 divided by 3 was 260 hours. Roughly eleven days.
"Eleven days," she said.
"Ten point eight, to be precise. Diana, in eleven days, direct sunlight will reach the station's current position. Surface temperature in direct sunlight at this latitude will exceed 430 degrees Celsius."
"I understand the thermodynamics, Miriam."
"I know you do. I'm sorry. I need to tell you the rest." Miriam's voice was very steady now, the way it got when she was delivering information she'd already processed and compartmentalized. "The earliest a rescue shuttle can launch from Kepler Ring is fourteen days from now. We don't have a shuttle rated for surface landing currently docked. The next supply rotation arrives in thirteen days, and we can turn it around for an emergency descent in approximately twenty-four hours after that."
"Fourteen days. The sun arrives in eleven."
"Yes."
Diana sat in the red-lit wreckage of her station and did what she always did when the world presented her with a problem that seemed unsolvable. She broke it into smaller problems.
"We can't stay here," she said.
"No."
"We can't drive. The crawler is gone."
"Yes."
"Frank can't walk. His leg is shattered."
"I know."
"So I walk. And I pull him. We stay ahead of the terminator until the shuttle can reach us. Three kilometers per hour—I can do that. I can do more than that, even pulling weight."
"The terrain between your position and the deeper nightside is rough, Diana. Crater fields, ridgelines, loose regolith. You won't be able to maintain a straight-line course."
"Then you route me. You have the orbital terrain data. Find me a path."
Another pause. "I'm already working on it."
Of course she was. That was Miriam.
"What can you carry?" Miriam asked.
"Water recycler. It's portable—fifteen kilos. Oxygen canisters—I'll take as many as I can manage. Rations. Medical supplies for Frank. The emergency shelter."
"The reflective shelter is rated for brief solar exposure. It'll buy you rest periods if the terminator gets close, but it's not a long-term solution."
"Nothing about this is a long-term solution. It's an eleven-day problem, and I'm going to solve it one day at a time."
Diana looked across the habitat at Frank, who was watching her from his makeshift bed with glassy, pain-dulled eyes. He'd heard everything.
"Well," he said, his voice thick. "I always wanted to see more of Mercury."
She almost laughed. Almost.
"Get some sleep," she told him. "We leave at 0600 station time."
She spent the rest of the night preparing. She didn't sleep. There would be time for sleep later, or there wouldn't, and either way the preparation was more important. She moved through the damaged station with methodical purpose, gathering what they'd need, discarding what they wouldn't, making calculations on her tablet that she checked and rechecked until the numbers were as solid as the ground beneath her feet.
Which, she reflected, hadn't turned out to be very solid at all.
