About this book

Summary

Millie loves living on the farm with her grandpa, where every morning begins with feeding the chickens, the goat, and the big pink pig. She has watched Grandpa do his chores a hundred times, but she has never done them by herself. When Grandpa wakes up too sick to get out of bed one cold morning, Millie must decide: can she take care of all the animals on her own? With boots too big and a heart full of worry, Millie steps into the barn to face her biggest challenge yet.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Before the Rooster

Millie lived on a little farm with a red barn, a wooden fence, and her grandpa.

Every morning, Grandpa woke up before the rooster. He would pull on his brown boots, zip up his green coat, and walk out to the barn while the sky was still purple and pink.

Millie loved to watch from her bedroom window. She could see Grandpa's flashlight bobbing in the dark like a friendly firefly.

Sometimes she went with him. She would carry the small bucket while Grandpa carried the big one. She would giggle when the chickens clucked and flapped. She would pet Buttercup the goat and scratch Hamlet the pig behind his floppy ears.

But Grandpa always did the hard parts. He scooped the feed. He poured the water. He knew exactly how much food each animal needed.

Millie just watched and helped a little bit.

That was okay with her. Grandpa was the real farmer.
