Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Littlest Light
In a cozy corner of Willow Meadow, where the tall grass swayed like green ribbons, lived a family of fireflies. There was Mama Firefly, Papa Firefly, and seven little fireflies who loved to zoom and zip through the warm summer air.
The smallest of them all was named Pip.
Pip had shiny black eyes, delicate wings, and a round little belly that was supposed to glow bright gold when night came. But here was the thing about Pip—a secret he kept tucked deep inside his heart.
He had never, ever turned on his light.
Not once.
Every evening, when the sun painted the sky orange and pink, Pip's brothers and sisters would stretch their wings and get ready for their nightly flight. One by one, their bellies would flicker on like tiny lanterns.
"Ready, everyone?" Papa would call.
"Ready!" they would chorus, their lights twinkling.
But Pip would hang back, pretending to fix his wing or check for dust on his antennae. And when no one was looking, he would slip away and hide under a big leaf until the darkness passed.
