About this book

Summary

Nine-year-old Henry Parker loves everything about his swim club—except the high dive. When the summer championship requires a dive from the terrifying top board, Henry does something he's never done before: he lies. With his older brother far away at boarding school and no one to help him through his fear, Henry pretends to be injured. But when his fake injury starts making things worse instead of better, Henry must decide if hiding from his fears is really easier than facing them.

Chapter 1: The Lie

Henry Parker stared up at the high dive. It looked a hundred feet tall, even though Coach Tanaka said it was only three meters.

"My shoulder hurts," Henry told her, rubbing it for effect.

Coach Tanaka frowned. "Since when?"

"Since yesterday. Really bad."

The lie worked. Henry sat on the bench while his teammates practiced their dives. He wished his brother Marcus was here. Marcus always knew how to make scary things feel smaller. But Marcus was at boarding school now, three thousand miles away.

Henry was on his own.
