About this book

Summary

Gus is a baby mouse who knows exactly what he likes: cheese. Yellow cheese, white cheese, cheese with holes—it's all perfectly wonderful. When his family offers him berries or seeds or bits of bread, Gus just shakes his tiny head. But what happens when one morning Gus wakes up with a grumbly tummy and discovers that all the cheese is gone?

Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Cheese, Please

In a cozy little hole beneath the old farmhouse kitchen, there lived a baby mouse named Gus.

Gus had soft gray fur, round pink ears, and the tiniest whiskers you ever did see. He also had a very big opinion about food.

"Cheese, please!" Gus would squeak every single morning.

And every single morning, his mama would smile and bring him a lovely piece of cheese.

Yellow cheese. White cheese. Cheese with holes. Gus loved them all.

"Try this berry," his papa would say, holding out something red and shiny.

Gus would shake his tiny head. "No thank you."

"How about a sunflower seed?" his big sister Molly would ask.

Gus would shake his tiny head again. "No thank you."

"A nice warm breadcrumb?" his grandma would offer.

Shake, shake, shake went Gus's tiny head. "No thank you. Only cheese will do."
