Chapter 1: The Numbers
The drill bit snapped at fourteen hundred meters, and Marta Hollis felt the vibration through the soles of her boots even before the alarm shrieked across the control deck. She killed the audio with a practiced slap against the console and pulled up the diagnostic feed, watching the telemetry scroll across her display in amber characters.
"Bit seven, sector twelve," she muttered, logging the failure. Third one this week in the same quadrant. The replacement cost alone would put her over budget for the quarter, and Director Paulsen had made it abundantly clear during their last meeting that budget overruns reflected poorly on management capability.
She leaned back in her chair and rubbed her eyes. Through the reinforced viewport to her left, Ceres-7 stretched out in a gray-brown expanse of regolith and exposed rock, pockmarked by extraction sites that glowed faintly under work lights. The asteroid had been her home for four years now—longer than she'd lived anywhere since leaving Luna.
The extraction bay hummed with activity below her office, a symphony of machinery and human voices that never quite stopped. Three shifts, twenty-four hours of continuous operation, seven days a week. That was the mandate from Helix Mining Corporation, and Marta had built her reputation on meeting mandates.
She pulled up the sector twelve data again, frowning at the numbers. The geological survey from two years ago showed dense rare earth deposits extending down to at least three thousand meters. They should have been pulling neodymium and dysprosium out of that quadrant for another decade. Instead, they kept hitting voids.
"Hollis, you seeing this?" The voice crackled through her earpiece—Tomas Brenner, her lead drilling supervisor, his thick Martian accent cutting through the static.
"The bit failure? Already logged it."
"Not that. The density readings from the bore sample. Something's wrong with the equipment."
Marta switched to the live feed from Brenner's helmet cam. He was standing at the edge of the drill site, holding a core sample under a portable scanner. The numbers on his display didn't make sense.
"That can't be right," she said. "Run it again."
"Third time I've run it. Same result. The sample's reading almost hollow. Like there's nothing down there but rock shell."
Marta felt a cold sensation settle in her stomach. "Seal the site. I'm coming down."
She grabbed her hardsuit from the rack by the door and began the familiar ritual of checking seals and oxygen levels. The suit smelled like recycled air and old sweat, a scent she'd long since stopped noticing. As she worked, her mind kept returning to those numbers.
Density readings didn't lie. Equipment could malfunction, sure, but three consecutive tests showing the same anomaly pointed toward something else entirely.
The elevator ride down to the extraction level took four minutes. Marta spent them reviewing the original survey data on her wrist display, scrolling through projections and estimates that had convinced Helix to sink three billion credits into Ceres-7 development. Fifty years of viable extraction, the reports promised. A generational investment.
The doors opened onto controlled chaos. Extraction teams moved between equipment stations, their movements economical and practiced. Marta nodded to the workers she passed, acknowledging greetings without breaking stride. They knew her as fair but demanding, the kind of manager who'd work a double shift alongside them if the situation required it.
Brenner was waiting at site twelve, his weathered face creased with concern beneath his helmet's faceplate. He was old-school Martian, third generation, with the stocky build and radiation-scarred skin that came from a lifetime in low-gravity, high-exposure environments.
"Show me," Marta said.
He handed her the core sample. It was lighter than it should have been—she could feel that immediately, even through her gloves. The scanner confirmed what Brenner had found: the sample's density was barely forty percent of projected values.
"Could be a localized void," Brenner offered, though his tone suggested he didn't believe it. "Asteroid geology is unpredictable."
"Pull the last six months of drilling data for this sector. Everything we've got."
"That's going to take—"
"Now, Tomas."
He nodded and moved off toward the data station. Marta stood alone at the drill site, staring down into the bore hole. The work lights illuminated only the first few meters before darkness swallowed everything.
She'd been in extraction operations for fifteen years. She'd worked the Trojan asteroids, the Belt, even a brief stint on Europa before the ice mining consortium went bankrupt. She knew what healthy mineral deposits looked like, how they responded to drilling, the way good rock felt when you pulled it from the ground.
This felt wrong. It felt hollow.
Back in her office three hours later, Marta spread the data across every display surface she had. Brenner's compilation covered two hundred and seventeen drill sites across sectors eight through fourteen. She'd expected to find anomalies in a handful of locations—geological surprises were part of the job.
Instead, she found a pattern.
The density readings had been declining steadily for eighteen months. Not dramatically enough to trigger automated alerts, but consistently, inexorably trending downward. Someone looking at any individual report might dismiss it as measurement variance. But taken together, the data told a different story.
Ceres-7 wasn't just experiencing localized voids. The entire asteroid was less dense than the original surveys indicated. Significantly less dense.
Marta pulled up the pre-development geological assessment—the document that had launched this entire operation. She compared its projections against current extraction rates and remaining reserve estimates.
The numbers didn't match. They didn't come close to matching.
She ran the calculations three times, hoping she'd made an error. Each time, the result was the same. Based on actual extraction data and current density readings, Ceres-7 had perhaps six months of economically viable resources remaining. Maybe eight, if they pushed into marginal deposits.
Not fifty years. Not even five years. Six months.
Marta sat very still in her chair, watching the numbers glow on her display. Outside her window, the extraction operations continued their endless rhythm, machines and workers pulling resources from rock that was running out far faster than anyone knew.
Seventeen thousand people were currently in transit to Ceres-7. Colonists who had signed five-year employment contracts, who had sold their homes and uprooted their families based on Helix Corporation's promise of stable, long-term work. Their ships wouldn't arrive for another four months.
They were coming to a future that didn't exist.
Marta closed the files and locked her terminal. She needed to see the original survey data—not the summary reports that had been distributed to investors and regulators, but the raw geological assessments that had formed the basis for everything.
Those files would be in Director Paulsen's secure archive. And getting access to them would require asking questions that couldn't be unasked.
