Chapter 1: The Burning Sky
The data arrived at 3:47 a.m., and Anya Erlandsen knew immediately that everything was over.
She sat in the basement observatory of the Arecibo-Successor Array in Puerto Rico, surrounded by the soft hum of cooling fans and the antiseptic glow of six monitors. The coffee in her mug had gone cold two hours ago. Her hair, dark and streaked with premature gray at thirty-eight, was pulled into a knot she'd stopped caring about sometime around midnight. The room smelled of ozone and the faint chemical sweetness of overworked processors.
The Wolf-Renz binary system had been her obsession for three years. Two massive stars locked in a gravitational embrace 140 light-years from Earth, spinning closer and closer in a dance that every model said should have ended catastrophically a million years ago. The system was a beautiful anomaly—the kind of puzzle that built careers and filled grant applications. She had published four papers on its orbital mechanics. She had named her cat after the smaller component star.
Now the smaller component star was gone.
The spectral data was unambiguous. Wolf-Renz B had collapsed. Not gradually, not in the slow dimming that theory predicted for a star of its mass class, but in a sudden, violent implosion that had sent a shockwave rippling through its companion. Wolf-Renz A, destabilized, was shedding its outer layers in a torrent of hard radiation—gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet flux orders of magnitude beyond anything the system had produced before.
Anya's hands trembled as she ran the propagation model. The wavefront was expanding at lightspeed, a sphere of killing energy racing outward through the interstellar medium. She plugged in Earth's coordinates, the distance, the inverse-square attenuation, the atmospheric absorption coefficients.
The answer came back in eleven seconds.
Nineteen months.
In nineteen months, the radiation wavefront would reach Earth's orbit. The atmosphere would hold—barely. The magnetosphere would deflect some of it. But the flux that penetrated would be sufficient to sterilize every exposed surface on the planet. Crops, forests, grasslands, shallow marine ecosystems—everything above the ocean's thermocline would receive a lethal dose. Not for a day or a week, but for centuries, as the destabilized companion star continued its slow, spectacular death.
She stared at the number. She ran it again. She changed the distance estimate by two percent in Earth's favor. She used the most optimistic atmospheric model she could justify.
Seventeen months, best case. Twenty-two, worst case.
The average was nineteen.
Anya picked up her phone. Her hands were steady now—the trembling had passed into something else, a cold clarity that felt almost like calm. She called Dr. Luis Ferreira at the European Southern Observatory. He answered on the sixth ring, groggy and irritable.
"Luis. It's Anya. I need you to look at Wolf-Renz. Right now."
"It's—what time is it there? Anya, I have a review panel in—"
"Wolf-Renz B collapsed. I'm looking at the spectral signature. I need independent confirmation before I do something that can't be undone."
The silence on the line lasted four seconds. Then she heard bedsheets rustling, a lamp clicking on.
"Give me twenty minutes," Luis said.
It took him fifteen. When he called back, his voice had the same hollow quality hers had carried an hour ago.
"Confirmed. Anya, the flux estimates—"
"I know."
"Have you told anyone?"
"I'm telling you."
"You need to call the IAU. The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. This needs to go through channels."
"Channels," she repeated. The word tasted like ash. "Luis, we have nineteen months. How long do channels take?"
"Anya—"
"How long did it take them to acknowledge the Apophis recalculation? Eleven months of review before they'd even issue a revised risk assessment. And that was for an asteroid that ended up missing us by thirty thousand kilometers."
"This is different."
"This is extinction."
She could hear him breathing. Outside her window, the Puerto Rican night was thick with the sound of tree frogs.
"What are you going to do?" he asked.
"I'm going to tell everyone."

She spent the next six hours writing. Not a paper—there was no time for peer review, no time for the careful hedging and qualification that academic publishing demanded. She wrote a report. Clear, direct, annotated with her raw data and her models, stripped of jargon wherever she could manage it. She included Luis's independent confirmation. She included the propagation timeline. She included a section titled "Implications for Surface Life" that she wrote with tears running silently down her face.
At 10:15 a.m., she uploaded the report to her personal website, emailed it to every science journalist in her contacts, posted the link to three major forums, and sent copies to the directors of NASA, ESA, JAXA, and Roscosmos.
At 10:47 a.m., her phone began ringing and did not stop.
At 11:30 a.m., her department chair called and told her, in a voice vibrating with barely controlled fury, that the National Security Council had issued a classification order on all data related to the Wolf-Renz event. Her report was to be retracted immediately. She was to make no further public statements.
"It's already out, David," she said. "You can't classify the sky."
At 2:15 p.m., two men in dark suits arrived at the observatory. They were polite. They showed credentials from an agency she'd never heard of. They asked her to come with them voluntarily. When she asked what happened if she declined, they were polite about that too, but the answer was clear enough.
She went.
They drove her to Roosevelt Roads, the old naval station on the eastern coast. She was placed in a room that was not quite a cell—it had a window, and a bed with actual sheets—but the door locked from the outside. They took her phone but left her laptop, which struck her as either an oversight or a test.
She spent three days in that room. She could hear helicopters coming and going at all hours. Twice, she heard someone crying in the corridor. The food was military rations, adequate but flavorless. She ate mechanically and continued refining her models on the laptop, working the numbers over and over as if repetition might change them.
On the fourth day, the door opened and a woman walked in.
She was in her early sixties, silver-haired, wearing a navy blazer over a white blouse. Her face was the kind that had been on magazine covers twenty years ago and had aged into something more interesting—sharp cheekbones, deep-set eyes, a mouth that looked like it had learned to smile strategically. She carried a leather portfolio and moved with the particular confidence of someone accustomed to being the most important person in any room.
"Dr. Erlandsen. I'm Senator Caroline Marsten. I chair the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which as of seventy-two hours ago has been repurposed into something considerably more urgent." She sat down in the room's only chair without waiting for an invitation. "You've caused an extraordinary amount of trouble."
"I told the truth."
"Yes, you did. And now fourteen cities are on fire, the stock markets have been suspended globally, and the Secretary-General is in a medically induced coma because he had a stroke during an emergency session. The truth, Dr. Erlandsen, is a blunt instrument. The question is what we do with it now."
Anya studied her. "You believe my models."
"I believed them before you published. The intelligence community had the same data three days before you did. They were sitting on it while they figured out how to manage the narrative. You made that impossible, which is why half of Washington wants you in prison and the other half wants to give you a medal."
"Which half are you?"
Marsten opened her portfolio. "I'm the half that wants you to help me save forty thousand people."

The briefing lasted four hours. Marsten laid out the bones of what she called Project Leviathan: a network of deep-ocean habitats, anchored to hydrothermal vents on the mid-ocean ridges, where geothermal energy and chemosynthetic bacterial farms could sustain human life indefinitely—or at least for the centuries it would take the surface to recover.
"The concept isn't new," Marsten said. "DARPA has been funding deep-ocean habitat research since the eighties. What's new is the timeline. We have nineteen months to design, manufacture, deploy, and populate structures that were supposed to be theoretical for another fifty years."
"Forty thousand people," Anya said. "Out of eight billion."
"Out of eight billion. Yes."
The number sat between them like a stone.
"How do you choose?" Anya asked.
"Lottery, weighted for essential skills. Geneticists, engineers, doctors, farmers—anyone who can keep a closed ecosystem running gets priority. The rest is random. It's the only system that won't start a war."
"It'll start a war anyway."
"Probably. But it's the only system I can defend to a camera." Marsten leaned forward. "Dr. Erlandsen, I need your radiation models to finalize the depth requirements. I need your atmospheric projections to determine how long we're down there. And I need your name on this project because, thanks to your very public act of civil disobedience, you're the only scientist on Earth that the general public actually trusts right now."
Anya looked at the schematics Marsten had spread across the bed. Titanium pressure domes. Oxygen-scrubbing coral reefs. Algae bioreactors. Transit tubes connecting habitat clusters. It was ambitious, elegant, and almost certainly impossible in the time they had.
"I'll need a team," she said.
"You'll have one. Commander Nils Jackson is your military liaison—submarine officer, twenty years in the service, knows pressure systems better than anyone alive. Dr. Caspar Draeger is your life-sciences lead. He's brilliant and he's strange, and you'll want to watch him."
"Watch him how?"
"He has ideas about human modification that make most ethicists reach for their resignation letters. But he's the best geneticist we have, and his work on extremophile adaptation is years ahead of anyone else's."
Anya filed that away. "And the construction? Who builds these things two kilometers underwater?"
"That's where it gets interesting. The saturation diving community is small. The people who can weld titanium at depth are smaller. We've identified a crew leader—a man named Soren Lindahl. Norwegian-American, former commercial diver, currently running a deep-sea pipeline repair operation in the Gulf of Mexico. He's rough, he's not interested in politics, and he's the best pressure welder on the planet."
"Does he know what he's signing up for?"
"He knows. He volunteered before we asked."
Anya looked at the window. Outside, the Caribbean sun was merciless and bright, pouring down on a world that had nineteen months of warmth left.
"When do we start?" she asked.
"We started three days ago," Marsten said. "You're the one who's late."
