Chapter 1: The Dark Star
The star had no business being dead.
Romy Halden stood at the observation blister of the *Penumbra*, her palms pressed flat against the curved transparency, and stared at the place where HD-4417 should have been burning. Her breath fogged the glass in slow, rhythmic pulses. Not gone, exactly. Juno paused, and Romy heard the soft click of her tongue against her teeth—the sound Juno made when data refused to cooperate with her expectations. "It's just... off. Like someone pulled the plug."
Romy turned from the observation blister. The bridge of the *Penumbra* was small by any standard—a vessel built for two, optimized for the particular lifestyle of the Driftborn. "When did it go out?" Romy asked.
"Based on the light-cone analysis, sometime in the last three hundred years. Local time, I mean. We left this region—" Juno consulted her chronometer, the one that tracked real-time against their subjective experience. "Forty-seven thousand years ago, by the galaxy's clock. Six weeks ago, by ours."
Six weeks. Romy lowered herself into the command chair and pulled up the long-range survey data they'd compiled before their last transit jump. HD-4417 had been burning normally then—a healthy, unremarkable star with a small system of rocky planets, none of them inhabited by anything more complex than bacterial mats. "Could it be a Dyson event?" Romy asked, though she already knew the answer. "Some civilization that enclosed it while we were in transit?"
"No. A Dyson sphere or swarm would still radiate waste heat—infrared, at minimum. This is radiating nothing. Zero-point nothing. The surface temperature is dropping toward equilibrium with the cosmic microwave background." Juno pulled one of her overlays into the shared display space between them. The data was stark: a flat line where there should have been a luminosity curve. "Whatever happened to this star, it wasn't engineering. At least, not any engineering I understand."
Romy studied the data in silence. She had been a Driftborn for a very long time—six hundred thousand years of subjective experience, accumulated over twenty million years of real time. She had watched civilizations rise and fall like weather patterns. She had seen stars born in nebular nurseries and watched white dwarfs cool to cinders. She had witnessed supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, the slow consumption of gas giants by their expanding parent stars. She understood stellar death in all its forms.
This was not stellar death. This was something else entirely.
"Log it," she said. "Full spectral workup, gravitational analysis, everything. And flag it for the network."
"Already done." Juno's fingers danced through her displays. "Transmission queued for the next relay beacon. Though who knows when anyone will pick it up. The nearest active Driftborn we know of is—" She checked. "Forty light-years away, and they won't emerge from transit for another two centuries."
That was the nature of Driftborn existence. They were a subculture of humanity—if "humanity" was even the right word anymore, after twenty million years of divergence and adaptation—who lived almost entirely in relativistic transit. They spent weeks or months at near-lightspeed, and when they emerged, decades or centuries or millennia had passed in the universe around them. They were temporal nomads, witnessing the life of the galaxy the way a passenger on an ancient train might have witnessed a landscape: in glimpses, separated by long intervals of compressed time.
The Driftborn network was a web of relay beacons, message caches, and navigational markers scattered across the galaxy, maintained by the collective effort of perhaps ten thousand individuals spread across millions of years of real time. Communication was slow, fragmented, asynchronous. A message sent today might not be received for centuries. A reply might take millennia. "They're aligned," Romy said.
"Yes. The extinction events radiate outward from a point approximately twelve thousand light-years above the galactic plane, in the halo. I've triangulated as best I can with seven data points." Juno highlighted the convergence point—a region of apparently empty space, far from any known structure. "There's nothing there. No star, no cluster, no known artifact. Just vacuum."
"Something is there," Romy said. "Something we can't see yet."
"Possibly. Or something that was there and moved on. Or something that operates on principles we don't understand." Juno leaned back in her chair and folded her arms. "Romy, I want to be clear about what I'm saying. Seven stars in fifty light-years is not a local anomaly. If this pattern holds across a larger volume, we're looking at thousands of extinctions. Maybe tens of thousands. And if the rate is accelerating—"
"I know."
"—then we're looking at a galactic-scale event. Something that could affect every star in the Milky Way within a few million years."
"I know, Juno."
They sat with that for a moment. The *Penumbra* hummed around them, patient and old, its systems ticking through their quiet routines.

"Do it."
Juno began plotting the transit. Romy remained in the command chair, staring at the seven red points on the display, the arc they formed, the empty convergence point in the halo.

"The triangulation," she said. "Does the network data confirm our convergence point?"

Fifteen million years. The extinctions had been occurring for fifteen million years, slowly, almost imperceptibly, and now they were accelerating. Whatever was happening was not new. "We need to go to the source," Romy said.
"The halo point."
"Yes."
Juno was quiet for a long time. Romy could see her working through the navigation—not just the mathematics of the transit, but the implications. The halo was far from the galactic disk, far from the stars and worlds and relay beacons that formed the infrastructure of Driftborn life. A transit to the convergence point would take them into genuinely empty space, with no guarantee of support or rescue if something went wrong.

"That's acceptable."
"Romy." Juno turned to face her directly. Her eyes were dark and serious. "Whatever is at that convergence point, it's been killing stars for fifteen million years. Every star it touches goes dark. If it can do that to a stellar furnace, what do you think it will do to us?"
"I don't know. That's why we're going."
"That's not a reason. That's curiosity dressed up as purpose."
Romy smiled, despite everything. "After six hundred thousand years, Juno, curiosity is the only purpose I have left."
Juno held her gaze for a moment, then shook her head and turned back to the navigation console. "I'll plot the first jump. We leave in six hours."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me. If we get erased from existence by a star-killing phenomenon, I want it on record that I had reservations."
"Noted."
Romy downloaded the complete network data to the *Penumbra's* archives and composed a message for the Pell Beacon's cache—a summary of their findings, their intended course, and a recommendation that any Driftborn who received the message begin their own investigations. She tagged it with the highest priority marker the network recognized, a designation that had been used fewer than a dozen times in eight million years of Driftborn history.
Then she sat in the observation blister and watched the brown dwarf's dim glow—the faint, ruddy light of a star too small to be a star, too cool to sustain life on any world, but still burning. Still giving off its meager warmth into the void.
How long, she wondered, before even this small light was taken?
She pressed her palm against the glass and felt the cold of space seeping through, and she made herself a promise: she would find what was at the convergence point. She would understand it. And if there was any way to stop it, she would.
